Hubble sees violent star formation episodes in dwarf galaxies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has imaged the faint irregular galaxy NGC 3738, a starburst galaxy. The galaxy is in the midst of a violent episode of star formation, during which it is converting reservoirs of hydrogen gas located in the galaxy's center into stars. Hubble spots this gas glowing red around NGC 3738, one of the most distinctive signs of ongoing star formation.

Lying in the constellation of Ursa Major (The Great Bear), NGC 3738 is located about 12 million light-years from the sun, and belongs to the Messier 81 group of galaxies. This galaxy -- first observed by astronomer William Herschel back in 1789 -- is a nearby example of a blue compact dwarf, the faintest type of starburst galaxy. Blue compact dwarfs are small compared to large spiral galaxies -- NGC 3738 is around 10,000 light-years across, just one tenth of the size of the Milky Way.

This type of galaxy is blue in appearance by virtue of containing large clusters of hot, massive stars, which ionize the surrounding interstellar gas with their intense ultraviolet radiation. They are relatively faint and appear to be irregular in shape. Unlike spirals or elliptical galaxies, irregular galaxies do not have any distinctive features, such as a nuclear bulge or spiral arms. Rather, they are extremely chaotic in appearance. These galaxies are thought to resemble some of the earliest that formed in the Universe and may provide clues as to how stars appeared shortly after the Big Bang.

This image was created by combining visual and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The field of view of the Wide Field Channel is approximately 3.4 by 3.4 arcminutes wide.

Unfortunately, Hugh Jackman has felt pain and loss at a very young age.?The award-winning actor shared the story of being abandoned by his mother, Grace, when he was only 8 years old and living with his two brothers and two sisters in Sydney.

Jackman tells Australian Women's Weekly his mom decided to move back to the U.K., and broke the news through a telegram the following day. It wasn't until he was around "12-13" years old that the now-Hollywood star realized his mother wasn't coming back.

"One of the main things I remember is that horrible feeling that people were talking about you and looking at you because it was odd for the mother to leave," he said.

"The thing I never felt, and I know this might sound strange, I never felt that my mum didn't love me. I've spoken about it at length with her since and I know she was struggling. She was in hospital after I was born suffering from post-natal depression," he added. "There wasn't a support network for her here."

Happy birthday, Hugh!

Jackman -- who recently celebrated his 44th birthday?-- ?has two beautiful children, Oscar, 12, and Ava, 7, with wife Deborra-Lee Furness, and he shares that becoming a parent helped him understand the type of pressures his mother was under.

In case you didn't know, Hugh Jackman's a movie star!

"I think having kids of your own just adds another level of empathy and understanding," he says. "And there comes a certain point in life when you have to stop blaming other people for how you feel or the misfortunes in your life."?

This All-Wood Clock Could Hang Anywhere

This wooden clock is great. It's in the style of the ones you remember hanging over the chalkboard in your middle school classrooms, but the two-toned wooden design makes it fresh and modern. More »

Mental Health Awareness Week ! | Scooch

imageMental Health Awareness Week !

?

According to?www.mentalhealthireland.ie,?and?www.spunout.ie?there are currently 1 in 3 people who suffer with mental health related issues. They also say that 1 in 9 of us will spend some time in mental health care before we reach the age of 65. I, personally, believe that these figures are astonishing. It is very upsetting to think that the majority of youth are unaware of such statistics, because the whole theme of mental health has been made a taboo subject. In my own school and home, I get the feeling that teachers and parents are uncomfortable discussing this topic. These are the key people in a child?s life and if they cannot answer our questions about this topic, it is very difficult for us to be informed.

I began to research mental health after I heard that there was investigations into the claim that exercise has a positive impact on our mental health. According to most researchers, doing 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day for 5 days a week can improve your mental health dramatically.?Aerobic exercises, such as running, walking etc. can decrease your level of anxiety. This was most effective on those with a low fitness level and high anxiety levels. Also, vigorous exercise such as swimming etc., showed improvements in those who suffered with depression.

During activities such as sport, or even walking the dog, your body release natural chemicals which, in-turn, improves your mood. It was also seen that many had a sense of accomplishment or worth after exercise. Other benefits included; less tension and stress, a natural energy boost, suppression of anger, or frustration and an improved social life. After all my research, it is now very apparent that exercise can have a very positive effect on mental health. So, next time you feel down, talk a walk with a friend. It is a chance to catch up, promote the release of natural chemicals and get some fresh air and maybe then you can see for yourself that exercise has many benefits, other than those to do with your physical body !
