On November 15th, student teams from the UCLA and USC will square off in a head-to head urban planning challenge, competing to see which school will take top honors for coming up with the best plan to revitalize Los Angeles? Slauson Corridor.
In their 15th annual match up, graduate students from UCLA?s Anderson School of Business and UCS? Marshall School of Business and its School of Policy, Planning & Development, will imagine a new look, new image and new real estate purpose for the northern block of Slauson Avenue, between Angeles Vista and Overhill Drive. The corridor has been the subject of a year-long revitalization project, and residents, business owners and stakeholders in the area are enthusiastic about bringing new shops, market rate housing and other community amenities to their neighborhood.
Once completed, the students? hard work will be carefully considered by an elite panel of judges comprised of industry leaders from the top development, investment, architectural and financial firms in Southern California.
In addition to gaining bragging rights and a chance to win the coveted ?Silver Shovel? the triumphant university also will have a $5,000 contribution made in its name to a charity benefitting the Special Olympics.
This year?s challenge, which is organized by NAOIP ? a commercial real estate development association ? is sponsored by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. The final projects produced by the teams, however, could have results that extend far beyond the contest. The winning team will present its findings to residents at an upcoming meeting of the Economic Development Taskforce for the Slauson Corridor later this fall, and the students? ideas could come to life once the actual redevelopment of the neighborhood has begun.
To date, UCLA and USC are both tied with seven wins each, so the pressure is on to create a dynamic and meaningful proposal!
