LivingSocial Confirms Layoffs: 400, All But A Couple Dozen In The U.S., 10% Of Workforce

livingsocialIt's not only Groupon that is feeling the crunch among daily deal sites: LivingSocial is laying off 400 employees today. There were reports of the layoffs out yesterday from more than one source; the company confirmed the number to TechCrunch in an email just now. "I can confirm that we notified approximately 400 employees today -- all but a couple dozen in the United States -- that their positions are being eliminated," a spokesperson told me. "That's about 10% of our global workforce."

Moscow court bans video of Pussy Riot's church performance

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, has suffered a stroke but is OK and resting in a Las Vegas hospital, a family friend said on Thursday. "He was doing well and says he's feeling OK," close family friend Brian Oxman told Reuters. Oxman, Michael Jackson's one-time attorney, said the 83-year-old patriarch of the pop music family started experiencing weakness on Wednesday while walking in a park near his home and was later admitted to a hospital. Jackson has a history of strokes, Oxman said. "He was talking fine," Oxman added. "He sounded excellent to me." A former ...

Rhino killings for horns rapidly rise in S. Africa

VAALKOP DAM NATURE RESERVE, South Africa (AP) ? By the time ranchers found the rhinoceros calf wandering alone in this idyllic setting of scrub brush and acacia, the nature reserve had become yet another blood-soaked crime scene in South Africa's losing battle against poachers.

Hunters killed eight rhinos at the private Finfoot Game Reserve inside the Vaalkop Dam Nature Reserve this month with single rifle shots that pierced their hearts and lungs. The poachers' objective: the rhinos' horns, cut away with knives and popped off the dead animals' snouts for buyers in Asia who pay the U.S. street value of cocaine for a material they believe cures diseases.

That insatiable demand for horns has sparked the worst recorded year of rhino poaching in South Africa in decades, with at least 588 rhinos killed so far, their carcasses rotting in private farms and national parks. Without drastic change, experts warn that soon the number of rhinos killed will outpace the number of the calves born ? putting the entire population at risk in a nation that is the last bastion for the prehistoric-looking animals.

"This is a full-on bush war we are fighting," said Marc Lappeman, who runs the Finfoot reserve with his father Miles and has begun armed vigilante patrols to protect the remaining rhinos there. "We here are willing to die for these animals."

Unchecked hunting nearly killed off all the rhinos in southern Africa at the beginning of the 1900s. Conservationists in the 1960s airlifted rhinos to different parts of South Africa to spread them out. That helped the population grow to the point that South Africa is now home to some 20,000 rhinos ? 90 percent of all rhinos in Africa.

From the 1990s to 2007, rhino poachings in South Africa averaged about 15 a year, according to a recent report by the wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC. In 2008, however, poachers killed 83 rhinos and by 2009, the number hit 122, the report says.

The killings grew exponentially after that: 333 in 2010, 448 in 2011 and as of Tuesday, at least 588 rhino killed this year alone, according to South Africa's Department of Environmental Affairs.

"That the year-on-year rhino poaching losses have continued to grow in the face of heightened awareness, constant media attention and concerted law enforcement effort is testament to just how pervasive and gripping the rhino crisis in South Africa has become," TRAFFIC wrote in its August report. "If poaching continues to increase annually as it has done since 2007, then eventually deaths will exceed births and rhino numbers in South Africa will start to fall."

Most of the killings, according to government statistics, occur in South Africa's massive Kruger National Park, covering 19,400 square kilometers (7,500 square miles) in the country's northeast abutting its borders with Mozambique and Zimbabwe. There, the impoverished slip across the park's borders, largely from Mozambique, to kill and dehorn rhino, earning the equivalent of months' wages in a single night of hunting. South Africa has deployed soldiers in the park with dogs to sniff out poachers, but their small force can't sufficiently cover a park that's roughly the same size as New Jersey.

The horns are sold by criminal gangs and smuggled into Asia. While poachers have been shot dead and hundreds of suspects arrested this year, the rhino killings continue unstopped largely because the trade is transnational and worth millions of dollars, said Julian Rademeyer, a journalist in South Africa who wrote "Killing for Profit," a book on rhino poaching that came out this month.

"The problem with law enforcement strategies is they end where our border ends," Rademeyer said.

And law enforcement can't always be trusted in South Africa, where corruption eats away at the nation. There have been several cases of rangers assigned to guard parks being arrested for aiding poachers.

With both South Africa and Swaziland allowing rhino to be hunted legally, criminal gangs have obtained hunting licenses under false pretenses. Gangs have hired prostitutes and the poor from Asia and Eastern Europe to pose as big game hunters with licenses to kill a single rhino apiece, Rademeyer said. Their "trophies" end up shipped back to Asia, where the horns are removed and sold.

Rhino horn is made of keratin, a tough protein found in human fingernails. Doctors have repeatedly said the material has no medical value. In Asia, however, demand for rhino horn has jumped dramatically. Experts blame it partly on a widespread rumor in Vietnam that rhino horn cures cancer, though some elite Vietnamese grind up horn and take it as a hangover cure or as a fever reducer.

The ever-increasing demand saw Vietnamese poachers kill the last of Vietnam's rare Javan rhinoceros last year for its horn. The World Wildlife Fund ranked Vietnam as the worst country for wildlife crime in Asia and Africa in July. The country is seen as having lax laws on importing horns. Diplomats at the Vietnamese Embassy in South Africa's capital Pretoria have also been linked to trafficking. Earlier this month, a South African court sentenced a Thai national to 40 years in prison for selling rhino horns.

With high-level officials involved and a strong demand, Rademeyer said poaching "will probably get a lot worse before it gets any better."

Rhino poachers have gone beyond Kruger and are targeting private farms and reserves. Poachers likely watched the Finfoot Game Reserve, which breeds rhino for game viewing, for days, Lappeman said. Workers caught a man in ragged clothes lurking around the park with more than 1,000 rand ($115) in crisp hundred rand bills and a new mobile phone in his pocket around the time of the killings, Lappeman said.

The poachers fired on the rhino far from the game lodge, probably moving methodically closer as no one came to investigate the shots, he said. Lappeman said he and his father only found the dead rhinos the day after seeing the lost calf.

One wounded mother rhino walked all the way to the property's edge, finally dying on a dirt road to be found first thing that morning.

"She had physically come to the road to die, to say, 'I'm dying, come fetch my calf,'" Lappeman said.

How PRWeb Helps Distribute Crap Into Google & News Sites

?What?s the use of PRWeb?,? tweeted Megan McCarthy of Reuters, trying to digest how that service ended up circulating a fake Google acquisition story. Come along, Megan and others, and I?ll explain one of the sorriest uses, getting crap into Google News and out into news sites.

For those who somehow missed today?s big tech news, PRWeb ran a press release saying that WiFi provider ICOA was being?acquired?by Google for $400 million. Plenty of outlets carried the news, until denials from both parties started circulating.?Instead, the release?appears to have been written by someone trying to pump up ICOA?s stock.

It?s a big embarrassment for PRWeb, which has now issued its own statement?on the matter:

PRWeb transmitted a press release for ICOA that we have since learned was fraudulent. The release was not issued or authorized by ICOA. Vocus reviews all press releases and follows an internal process designed to maintain the integrity of the releases we send out every day. Even with reasonable safeguards identity theft occurs, on occasion, across all of the major wire services. We have removed the fraudulent release and turned the matter over to the proper authorities for further investigation.

Others will delve into what Vocus ? the company that owns PRWeb ? does to supposedly ensure that someone who says they?re posting news on behalf of a company really is representing that company. I?m going to focus instead on the idea that PRWeb is apparently reviewing all press releases to ensure the ?integrity? of them. That will help explain why, in this day when any company can instantly issues press releases, a service like PRWeb still exists.

This Is Integrity?

It?s all about distribution. In the past, you?d get a press release out and hope newspapers might pick up the story, often using the release as a basis for writing their own stories ? ones that might be fact-checked, or sourced with others, or get turned into something other than a promotional item.

Instead, with PRWeb and other services, you can get whatever you want published and distributed?verbatim?into a wide range of news sources. To illustrate this, let?s start with some published press releases that should all have the required integrity promised by PRWeb.

We?ll begin with a search for releases on the important news topic of viagra:

I?m going to focus on the third release listed, one headlined, ?How to Buy Drugs ? Lowest Price Viagra, Buy Levitra Viagra ? Online Pill Store,? as you can see below:

There?s so much to love in this release. My favorite part is probably the pullout quote, ?Levitra Buy Viagra.? But also, apparently the online pharmacy is both ?trustworthy? and able to sell prescription drugs without customers needing a prescription. I guess that?s because it?s a ?licensed and legal European??pharmacy, which is pretty clear given that big American flag and ?American quality? logo in the press release image, along with a?Canadian?maple leaf and the words ?Canadian Online Pharmacy.?

I have no reason to doubt all of this, to doubt the claims at all, because as you can see from the PRWeb statement, this release was reviewed to ensure it had the right ?integrity? that PRWeb apparently feels it needs to maintain with its service.

Distribution Time!

Once the release was posted, it was then distributed to a range of outlets that PRWeb helpfully itemizes, including Google News and, if you paid extra, through the Associated Press and thus to news outlets like the New York Times to The Oregonian:

As it turns out, the Viagra release above didn?t make it into Google News, perhaps because only the ?Standard? package of $159 was purchased. Google News and news search engines seem to require going up to the ?Advanced? package for $199.

Injecting Integrity Into Google News

That?s OK, we can see how even a release that isn?t directly distributed on PRWeb to Google News can still pollute it, in the ?how to buy viagra??search below in Google News:

All those sites marked ?Hacked? are Google News sources where some or all of the entire article that Google News saw, when it visited the site, was completely different than what the actual article was about. If you?re wondering why Google?s ?Penguin? spam fighting update hasn?t caught this, the answer is likely two-fold:

  • Penguin is applied to Google Web Search, rather than Google News
  • Google News is radically screwed-up

There?s an entire separate article we?ll get to eventually on how the relevancy of Google News seems to have gotten worse recently, with stories being surfaced that can be woefully out-of-date. The fact that all these hacked sites are showing up is just one sign that perhaps Google News needs more attention than it has been getting from Google.

Postscript: Technically, the Penguin update was aimed at fighting spam, not hacking attempts. That?s a bigger reason why Penguin isn?t having an impact on the hacking within Google News. But then again, the people hacking these web sites are doing so with the intent of spamming Google?s results. So, I still count it as a disappointment that you see so much of this happening.

Injecting Integrity Into News Publishers

But let?s move on to that ?News Publisher? item. That, supposedly, is a story from the Houston Chronicle called ?Levitra Buy Viagra.? It was indeed published by the Houston Chronicle, and it was a legit story in the sense that the paper wasn?t hacked. Rather, it?s a PRWeb distributor:

It looks to be exactly the same press release, from the same company, that I mentioned above. I haven?t done a word-by-word match, but at the very least, it?s virtually?identical. Oh, there is one difference. This release was published at the end of October, rather than the end of November. I guess there was that much change with the company that it made sense to issue the same release again just a month later.

Try doing searches for ?lowest price viagra? or ?online pill stores,? and you can see similar things to what I?ve described above happening.

?But wait,? I hear you say, ?No one searches for such things in Google News!? Maybe. Maybe not. But they search for many other things, both in Google News and in Google, where news results may appear. Say, for example, ?vitamin injections,? which generates these results on Google News:

Plenty of news coverage on the topic from the San Francisco Chronicle. Er, make that from the San Francisco Chronicle running PRWeb press releases.

Injecting Integrity Into Bing & Yahoo

It?s not just Google, of course, that gets infected by this madness. Here?s the same search, this time at Bing:

Bless, at least Bing gives me an actual news story up top, sadly from the Daily Mail, but this is Daily Mail fare. But after that, it?s PRweb distribution taking over. I particularly like the stories tagged as being from Yahoo. This is a PRWeb twofer win!

You see, the PRWeb ?stories? on vitamin injections got distributed to Yahoo (here?s one of them), where they became available to those searching on Yahoo News. But in turn, they also became fodder that Bing News carried.

The Legit Way To Buy Links

I haven?t even gotten into the other aspect of why people buy on PRWeb, which is to get links. Links are still an important ranking factor for search engines. Buying a press release through PRWeb is an easy and legit way to effectively buy links, a way that Google doesn?t penalize you for.

Postscript: Doing a little more digging, it appears that the head of Google?s web spam team, Matt Cutts, specifically said way back in 2005 that links from PRweb don?t carry credit. Of course, there are plenty of people who might assume they still do. It?s not like there?s any easy-to-spot notice informing people that Google discounts these links. And the ?Advanced Package? that PRweb pitches as being ?search-optimized? has ?anchor text links? as a selling point.

Fake News About Google In Google

By the way, today?s fake press release that Google had to deny ironically got?visibility?through Google itself. That fake release generated stories that assumed it was true, and around 12:15pm ET today, when the denial stories were picking up, Google was still giving visibility to the incorrect stories:

Bing, on the other hand, got it right with the denial stories showing up.

HP Introduces A Small But High Speed DAT160 Tape For Backing ...

Here at Odsi we're more than a competitive online reseller of brand name tape media. We focus on all of the things that are of interest to our customers, not only in saving you money but also in saving you time.

View all articles by Mark Paul Businesses in today?s world are completely dependent on computers. There is not even a single business which operated without a computer system. There is absolutely no doubt about the fact that computerized businesses have made our lives easier but at the same time we need to realize that working with computers in everyday routine and being so much dependent on them is full of risk. Computers are after all machines and machines cannot be trusted completely.

When something goes wrong with the computer system the first thing you worry about getting lost is the data. In many cases data cannot be recovered and this would mean such a great loss. Therefore, data should be protected and kept safe using the backup devices. Tape drives have been invented for this purpose. The tape drives allow data to be read and written off and this data can be accessed whenever it is required.

DAT format is the best one around the world. It has an installed base of nearly 1.9 million drives and HP has enhanced the quality of its backup devices using the latest DAT format. Because of this the HP DAT-160 tape system provides high performance which will exceed the normal storage requirements of small and medium sized businesses. The HP DAT-160 tape can be trusted for its high reliability and low cost.

This will easily fulfill the demands of businesses which are aware of the risk they are dealing with when it comes to their data. HP is definitely the brand to go for. The products of HP are trusted all over the world for better quality and reliability and customers all over the world prefer buying the products from a well known and well established manufacturer such as HP. HP alone has a market share of 76 percent and this fact alone is enough to judge the demand for HP products.

HP DAT-160 cartridge delivers native data storage capacity of 80 gigabytes. Good news is that this can be increased to 160 GB for recording compressed data. As compared to the AIT tapes, this one has a lower cost and this will definitely be ideal for small and medium sized businesses. Keeping a check on costs is a very important thing and businesses are very conscious about keeping their costs in control. Backing up might sound like an increase in the business?s costs to some people and they might want to avoid it.

But with the HP DAT-160 tape, backing up has been made easier and very affordable for all sorts of businesses. Moreover, it is the most practical way of dealing with backing up data. The HP DAT-160 tape comes inside a case which will protect it from dust and other particles. There are absolutely no worries for the storage of this cartridge as it already comes inside a case.

It can be stored anywhere safe and there are also no special requirements for its operational use. You might just have to keep a check on some temperature variables and the level of humidity.t is the most ideal backup technology for small and medium sized businesses at a very affordable price.

DDS 3 tape cartridges are very robust, reliable and cost efficient. High performance SDLT tapes, LTO tapes, DDS tapes, AIT tapes, RDX cartridges and HP C5709A, DDS cleaning cartidges are available at Odsi.co.uk, at low price. Brain area's role in learning identified

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? An area of the brain called the orbitofrontal cortex is responsible for decisions made on the spur of the moment, but not those made based on prior experience or habit, according to a new basic science study from substance abuse researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Scientists had previously believed that the area of the brain was responsible for both types of behavior and decision-making. The distinction is critical to understanding the neurobiology of decision-making, particularly with regard to substance abuse.

The study was published online in the journal Science.

Scientists have assumed that the orbitofrontal cortex plays a role in "value-based" decision-making, when a person compares options and weights consequences and rewards to choose best alternative. The Science study shows that this area of the brain is involved in decision-making only when the value must be inferred or computed rapidly or hastily. If the value has been "cached" or pre-computed, like a habit, then the orbitofrontal cortex is not necessary.

The same is true for learning -- if a person infers an outcome but it does not happen, the resulting error can drive learning. The study shows that the orbitofrontal cortex is necessary for the inferred value that is used for this type of learning.

"Our research showed that damage to the orbitofrontal cortex may decrease a person's ability to use prior experience to make good decisions on the fly," says lead author Joshua Jones, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a research scientist at NIDA, part of the National Institutes of Health. "The person isn't able to consider the whole continuum of the decision -- the mind's map of how choices play out further down the road. Instead, the person is going to regress to habitual behavior, gravitating toward the choice that provides the most value in its immediate reward."

The study enhances scientists' understanding of how the brain works in healthy and unhealthy individuals, according to the researchers.

"This discovery has general implications in understanding how the brain processes information to help us make good decisions and to learn from our mistakes," says senior author Geoffrey Schoenbaum, M.D., Ph.D., adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and senior investigator and chief of the Cellular Neurobiology Research Branch at NIDA. "Understanding more about the orbitofrontal cortex also is important for understanding disorders such as addiction that seem to involve maladaptive decision-making and learning. Cocaine in particular seems to have long-lasting effects on the orbitofrontal cortex. One aspect of this work, which we are pursuing, is that perhaps some of the problems that characterize addiction are the result of drug-induced changes in this area of the brain."

The scientists are continuing their research, examining the specific coding of the neurons in the orbitofrontal cortex during this process, as well as the effects that drugs of abuse have upon this area of the brain.

"Drug addiction is marked by severe deficits in judgment and bad decision-making on the part of the addict," says Dr. Jones. "We believe that drugs, particularly cocaine, affect the orbitofrontal cortex. They coerce the system and hijack decision-making."

The researchers examined the orbitofrontal cortex's role in value-guided behavior. The brain assigns two different types of values to behaviors and choices. Cached value is a value that is learned during prior experience. Inferred value happens on the spur of the moment, considering the entire model of rewards and consequences.

"Cached value is stored during prior experience, says Dr. Jones. "For example, you learn your route home on your commute through experience -- the habit of how you get home. You turn right, go left, make another right. Inferred values, however, are based on estimating goals and values on the fly using your knowledge of the entire structure of the environment. For example, instead of just habitually going home on your usual route, you have the full map in your mind of all the roads that you use. You can adjust your route, making different turns, depending on the time of day or the amount of traffic. These inferred decisions are adaptive -- much more flexible based on the situation."

The scientists used a rat model for their research, disabling the orbitofrontal cortex and measuring the difference in behavior that resulted. Further study using the same rat model -- work not reported in this paper -- has shown that cocaine use mimics this damage to the orbitofrontal cortex.

Further study of this neurobiological mechanism is needed, and the results have not been replicated in humans, but certainly the research is promising, says E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., vice president for medical affairs at the University of Maryland and John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor and dean at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "Our goal here at the School of Medicine is to make groundbreaking discoveries in the laboratory that can be translated into new treatments and new hope for patients and their families," says Dean Reece. "We are hopeful that research tells us more about the basic mechanisms in the brain will translate to new techniques in neurobiology and in treating devastating conditions such as drug addiction."

Independence drive falters for Spain's Catalonia

MADRID (AP) ? Voters in Spain's Catalonia region favored the right to decide on possible independence but split their ballots between fractious parties, making the prospect of secession less likely than ever.

Artur Mas, leader of the northeastern region's ruling center-right coalition, had sought an absolute majority in Sunday's vote to get a mandate for an independence referendum that the central government says would be unconstitutional. But his Convergence and Union party lost seats while another rival, the pro-independence Republican Left of Catalonia, made big gains.

Mas is expected to take weeks to try to cobble together a coalition majority. Spain's central government in Madrid predicted Monday that the result will mark the end of a secession vote drive that has distracted authorities who are trying to prevent Spain from being forced into a bailout.

While the two Catalonian parties share the goal of holding the referendum, they are far apart on almost everything else and analysts said it would be very difficult for them to form an alliance.

"They agree on the issue of the right to decide the future of the Catalan people, but on economic issues they have opposite positions," said Carlos Berrera, a communications professor at the University of Navarra.

In power for the past two years, Convergence and Union has introduced painful austerity cuts in Catalonia that have been vigorously opposed by Republican Left.

Catalonia, a region of 7.5 million people that includes Spain's second-largest city of Barcelona, is one of the areas suffering the most in the country's four-year-old economic crisis, which has left unemployment at 25 percent.

Catalonia is responsible for around a fifth of Spain's economic output and many residents complain that the central government in Madrid takes in more tax money from the region than it gives back. But now Catalonia is the most indebted region in Spain and has had to seek a ?5.4 billion bailout from Madrid.

The central Spanish government, which fiercely opposes the idea of an independence referendum, was quick to praise the vote.

Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo called the outcome "a good result for Catalonia, Spain and Europe, though not for Convergence and Union."

Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria described the election as "a serious blow for Mas" but one that "put the priorities in order."

"Voters want governments focusing on the crisis and creating jobs," she added.

In all, the ruling party in Catalonia lost 12 seats, going down to 50 seats in the 135-seat regional legislature, with the Republican Left coming in second with 21 seats. Five other parties split the remainder, with most of those seats going to parties opposed to independence.

Mas did not immediately outline Monday how he will try to form a government. Republican Left leader Oriol Junqueras said voters had issued a "mandate to hold a referendum" but he ruled out forming a coalition with Convergence and Union.

Junqueras said his party would continue to demand that Mas' government change its austerity policies, calling for lower taxes for most and for banks and the rich to shoulder more costs. But he didn't rule out working with Mas on specific issues.

Jordi Matas, a political science professor at the University of Barcelona, said Mas might try to seek a limited deal with the Republican Left only on the referendum and other issues that falls short of a coalition.

While pro-referendum parties won a majority in the vote, Matas said the result of a hypothetical referendum is too hard to predict.

Mas' only other options for coalition partners are the center-right Popular Party or the center-left Socialist Party ? but he would have to drop his push for a secession referendum because both vigorously oppose such a vote.

The outcome of Sunday's vote produced such a political stalemate that it's impossible to predict whether a renewed drive for a secession referendum would work, said Angel Rivero Rodriguez, a political science professor at Madrid's Autonomous University.

"Right now we are not sure about the state of the Catalan independence process," he said. "We don't know if this new situation is going to accelerate the process or hide it again indefinitely."

Catalonia has had a long history separatist sentiment, especially since its own language and cultural traditions were harshly repressed by Gen. Francisco Franco's military dictatorship from the end of Spain's Civil War in 1939 until his death in 1975.

This fall, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy refused to ease Catalonia's tax load, prompting some 1.5 million people to turn out in Barcelona in September for the largest Catalonian nationalist rally since the 1970s.

Ezine Publishing As A Business | Vermont Free Speech

If you have your own website or are planning to create one soon in the course of your research you will have read about the importance of publishing an ezine (electronic newsletter) as a way of generating traffic to your site.

Note to purists: yes I DO understand there is strictly speaking a difference between ezines and electronic newsletters but for our purposes it doesnt matter so dont write me. ;)

Its good advice. By capturing the email addresses of your site visitors (via an ezine sign-up form at your site) you can develop a mailing list to put yourself before time and time again unless and until they ask to be removed. The idea is that by regularly sending your ezine to your list your site visitors get to know you and over time come to trust you as an expert in your field. Assuming you do competent work that is.

But ezine publishing can be a lot more than just a traffic generation tool a means to an end. It can be an end unto itself. Your ezine can actually be a business in its own right.

How can an ezine be a paying proposition in itself? There are two ways by accepting paid advertising and charging for subscription.

Advertising

When I started my ezine way back when in July 1999 I was just following conventional wisdom. I had created a web site by the same name and wanted to publish an ezine as a way of staying in touch with site visitors and reminding them to visit my site.

What ended up happening though is that the ezine became the central plank of my business and the website became secondary. Why? Well concord replica watch first of all I found that I actually enjoyed it. I enjoyed writing articles and I enjoyed the fact that other people actually got some benefit from my labors. But beyond that once I had amassed a subscriber database of 1 000 or so people started asking me what my advertising rates were. I didnt have any. I had never really thought of my ezine as being a revenue generator in and of itself. The most I was hoping for was to remind readers to visit my site in the hope that while there they would place an order for one of the affiliate programs I promoted thereby earning me a commission. Of course I was also running ads for my own affiliate programs in the ezine which translated into income via commissions but gerald genta replica solotempo fake watch again the ezine was a means to an end not an end unto itself.

When advertisers started approaching me however I soon changed my thinking and my focus and before long I had on average ten to twelve advertisers wanting to run ads in my ezine every single week.

So quite quickly accepting paid advertising in my ezine became a primary revenue source certainly way ahead of anything else that was generating revenue for me at the time from my website.

Things have changed considerably for all ezine publishers from those heady days where ezine advertising was all the rage and demand for ezine advertising space outstripped supply. No longer do I publish a dozen ads in each issue. Now its only five or so but paid advertising remains an important element of my business plan and it is still a very viable revenue generation model for you to use in your online business.

Paid Subscriptions

Just as ezine advertising has slowed down paid subscription ezines are emerging as the next hot trend. More and more the concept of free content on the Internet is giving way to user pays and ezine publishing is no exception with ezine publishers beginning to charge for subscription to their ezines in lieu of (or in addition to) running paid ads.

For those who (for some reason) believe that everything on the Internet should be free (as long as theyre not the ones who have to do the work for nothing of course) this is on a superficial level probably bad news. But on the other hand when someone is paying for content it had better be worth it. So the upside is that subscribers to paid ezines are more likely to be getting (and will demand) better quality content than they are used to from the typical free ezine. In other words you get what you pay for.

So what does all this mean for you the would-be Internet entrepreneur? Quite simply if youre an expert in anything (and we all are) you can turn that knowledge into the foundation of an online business by publishing an ezine on that subject including your own original articles on a regular basis (dont bother just regurgitating someone elses if youre publishing them so are others and the object of the exericse is to make an original contribution) and either accepting paid advertising or charging subscribers a subscription fee.

All right then how do I start an ezine? movado gentry replica watch I hear you say.

Come Up With a Great Idea

Dont waste your time (or everyone elses) publishing yet another Internet marketing ezine. How many ways are there to say the same thing? Theyre a dime a dozen and worth even less. Do the hard work of coming up with something thats original and fresh something that every man and his dog isnt already doing. It doesnt matter how specialized the subject matter the Internet audience is vast you will attract your share of it. In fact amvox fake watch the more targeted your audience the better. Far replica jaeger lecoultre master minute repeater watches far better to have 500 devoted readers than 5 millenary replica watches 000 who may or may not even open let alone read your ezine.

(And dont believe the naysayers who will try and convince you that because there are already so many ezines being published there is no room for you. There is ALWAYS room for quality original content and there always will be.)

Write a Few Articles

Before you publish your first issue write a few articles about your chosen subject and submit them together with a resource box that includes a way for people to subscribe to your new ezine. This is just to drum up interest so that you actually have a few subscribers to send your first issue to.

What do I mean by submitting your articles? There are many ezine publishers and webmasters looking for fresh replica tissot watches quality content for their ezines and web sites that they dont want to have to create for themselves.

In response to this demand a number of services and web sites have sprung up to collect content contributions from people like you and make it available to people like them.

Independence drive falters for Spain's Catalonia

MADRID (AP) ? Voters in Spain's Catalonia region favored the right to decide on possible independence but split their ballots between fractious parties, making the prospect of secession less likely than ever.

Mas told reporters Monday night he would not resign, was still committed to pushing for a referendum that he thinks will happen within four years and would try in the coming weeks to cobble together a coalition majority.

"We detected a sociological change in Catalonia supporting sovereignty," he said. "The people have spoken and now the situation is clearer and more complicated."

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

SEO, or ?search engine optimization?, means setting up your website so that it is as high as possible in the search engine rankings. There are many paid services just for increasing SEO. You may have been told by people that effective SEO is complicated and should be left to the professionals. Pay no attention to that.

One of the first questions to ask is how many years of experience they have in SEO. You will want to find out what risks are involved in order to make the best decisions for your site.

Configure your server such that it differentiates capital and lowercase letters in URLs. Not checking this can end up in less traffic to your site.

Focus on mastering one SEO strategy at a time. There are not enough minutes in a day to get a hold of every technique. You need to focus your understanding on just a few areas and master them fully.

Many believe that keywords in their comment tags will create a more visible site. You should focus on the things you post on your site.

If you are looking to increase your site?s visibility, you need to make sure that you sign up for free local listing through Google and Yahoo. These services get your site noticed, which means more people will visit your site. Do not turn down free publicity.

Do not create pages full of links. Instead, incorporate the links into your page content, so there is a blending of both links and pertinent material for your readers. Link pages are boring to your readers and are not ranked highly by the search engines. You will appear to know what you are doing if all of your information is relevant.

When you optimize a web page using keywords, you should focus on a single phrase that will attract traffic. Stuffing a page with more than one keyword tends to lead to confusion. The better your content, the more interested your readers will be. Search engine optimization is important but a establishing a core group of readers will benefit your business in great ways.

Keywords will help you improve the visibility of your sites. Coordinate your keywords with your article topics. This makes it easier for search engines to index your work. It will be easier to draw new readers into your site. Place a keyword in the title, in the summary, and include it in the body about four to five times.

If you upgrade your website often, you will get more attention from search engine spiders. The better the content you provide, the more likely it is to be shared on other websites, providing you backlinks and increased traffic. After an article is shared, it starts to bring in higher levels of traffic.

If you are managing a business website, encourage the CEO or the owner of the business to become involved online. People like hearing from the big guy himself.

Social media sites can serve as great marketing tools to promote your business. YouTube is great for videos, while Facebook and Twitter allow direct interaction.

If you utilize audio or video as part of your website?s content mix, consider including transcripts as part of the post. These transcripts will help search engines better place your website in relevant searches.

Though SEO does have layers of complexity that are best reserved for professionals, there is no reason to believe that beginners cannot also use this tool to their advantage. Instead of wasting time and money hiring someone else, learn a few simple tips to get your website to the top of the search engines? listings. It may be even easier than you imagined!
