Chimpanzees create 'social traditions': Unique handclasp grooming behavior reveals local difference

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Researchers have revealed that chimpanzees are not only capable of learning from one another, but also use this social information to form and maintain local traditions.

A research collaboration between the Gonzaga University and the Max Planck Institute shows that the way in which chimpanzees groom each other depends on the community to which they belong. Specifically, it is the unique handclasp grooming behaviour that reveals this local difference.

The specific behaviour that the researchers focused on was the 'grooming handclasp', a behaviour where two chimpanzees clasp onto each other's arms, raise those arms up in the air, and groom each other with their free arm. This behaviour has only been observed in some chimpanzee populations. The question remained whether chimpanzees are instinctively inclined to engage in grooming handclasp behaviour, or whether they learn this behaviour from each other and pass it on to subsequent generations.

Edwin van Leeuwen and Katherine Cronin of the Comparative Cognitive Anthropology research group of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics led by Daniel Haun conducted their observations between 2007 and 2012 at the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust in Zambia. At Chimfunshi, a mix of wild- and captive-born chimpanzees live in woodlands in some of the largest enclosures in the world. The Max Planck team collaborated with students from Gonzaga University led by Mark Bodamer, a team of local chimpanzee caretakers, and Roger Mundry of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in order to collect and comprehend the detailed chimpanzee data.

Previous research suggested that the grooming handclasp might be a cultural phenomenon, just like humans across cultures engage in different ways of greeting each other. However, these suggestions were primarily based on observations that some chimpanzee communities handclasp and others don't -- not whether there are differences between communities that engage in handclasping. Moreover, the early observations could have been explained by differences in genetic and/or ecological factors between the chimpanzee communities, which precluded the interpretation that the chimpanzees were exhibiting 'cultural' differences.

The present research shows that even between chimpanzee communities that engage in the grooming handclasp, subtle yet stable differences exist in the styles that they prefer: one chimpanzee group highly preferred the style where they would grasp each other's hands during the grooming, while another group engaged much more in a style where they would fold their wrists around each other's wrists.

"We don't know what mechanisms account for these differences," van Leeuwen says. "But our study at least reveals that these chimpanzee communities formed and maintained their own local grooming traditions over the last 5 years. Our observations may also indicate that chimpanzees can overcome their innate predispositions, potentially allowing them to manipulate their environment based on social constructs rather than on mere instincts."

Apart from the different style preferences of the chimpanzee communities, the research team also observed that the grooming handclasp behaviour was a long-lasting part of the chimpanzees' behavioural repertoire: the behaviour was even transmitted to the next generation of potential handclaspers.

"By following the chimpanzees over time, we were able to show that 20 young chimpanzees gradually developed the handclasp behaviour over the course of the five-year study. The first handclasps by young individuals were mostly in partnership with their mothers. These observations support the conclusion that these chimpanzees socially learn their local tradition, and that this might be evidence of social culture," Bodamer explains.

"Continued monitoring of these groups of chimpanzees will shed light on the question of how these group-traditions are maintained over time and potentially even why the chimpanzees like to raise their arms up in the air during social grooming in the first place," van Leeuwen adds.

Foxconn announces $226 million half-year net loss, blames usual suspects

Foxconn announces $226 million halfyear net loss, blames usual suspectsManufacturing behemoth Foxconn (Hon Hai) has announced a record net loss of $226 million on turnover of $2 billion for the first half of the year. Unsurprisingly, it attributed the loss to the European debt crisis, global economic slowdown and its customers "continuous struggle" for market share. While it made a big push to encourage new customers, capacity far outstripped demand. In order to stem the tide, it's relocating some of its Shenzen-based facilities to sites in Northern China -- and it's also in talks with carriers to become an ODM, building white-label smartphones in the same way that Huawei and ZTE do. While the loss isn't a rosy picture, the company does have nearly $2 billion stashed in the bank, so it shouldn't be worrying too much.

2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid Test Drive

On-Sale Date: Fall 2012

Price: $25,995 to $32,280 (base SE to optioned SEL; includes $795 delivery)

Competitors: Toyota Prius V, Mazda5, Subaru Impreza 5-door

Powertrain: 2.0-liter I4 with electric hybrid; 188 hp total; CVT, FWD

EPA Fuel Economy (city/hwy): 47/47 mpg

What's New: Aimed squarely at the market-dominanting Toyota Prius, Ford's C-Max Hybrid brings a 50-hp advantage, more passenger room, and much higher fuel-economy ratings to the fight (the Toyota makes 40 mpg highway and 42 overall compared with the Ford's 47/47). It also undercuts the price of the comparable Prius V by $1300. By adapting its the European-market, Focus-based C-Max five-door hatchback, which was introduced in 2010 but not previously sold in America, Ford achieved a distinct body style?an important factor for hybrid buyers intent on making a statement?without engineering a unique platform.

Tech Tidbit: Ford builds its own lithium-ion battery packs in-house. More compact and potent than the nickel?metal hydride (NiMH) batteries in previous Ford hybrids (and still used by Toyota), the smaller pack leaves room for a 13.5-gallon gas tank (versus 11.9-gallon in the Prius V) and a 570-mile driving range without refueling. And that assumes a real-world 42.2 mpg; hypermilers no doubt will fill Internet discussions with boasts of driving more than 600 miles between stops.

Driving Character: The polished character of the Focus platform and the C-Max's significant power advantage over a Prius combine to form a hybrid you can live with, as we found on two-lane canyon roads east of Malibu, Calif. Because it's heavier and has a higher center of gravity than the Focus (despite the mass of the battery low and to the rear), the C-Max wouldn't be a driving enthusiast's first choice for fun. But the drone of the CVT at least provides appreciable acceleration even uphill. The electronic stability control lends a hand without being intrusive, and the standard 17-inch wheels with 225/50-R tires provide a sense of cornering grip far beyond what you'd expect for this segment.

Favorite Detail: Storage bins under the rear seats provide a place to stow the clutter of odds and ends kids tend to accumulate. This offsets (though only a little) the one comparison between the C-Max and Prius that tilts strongly Toyota's way: cargo capacity with the rear seat folded?52.6 cubic feet in C-Max versus 67.1 in Prius V.

Driver's Grievance: Althought the MyFordTouch infotainment system has improved with each generation, there's still a steep learning curve new owners will have to climb. This is more an issue for multidriver households than for the person who will drive it daily and settle into the settings that work best for him or her.

The Bottom Line: Even with gas prices on the uptick, it's hard to justify the extra buy-in cost of a hybrid. But the 47-mpg rating and sticker price advantage of the C-Max Hybrid make the argument stronger for the Ford than for the Toyota Prius V. Ford's goal here seems not to be convincing a lot of Prius loyalists to switch brands, but rather to claim a bigger share of a growing segment. And with the C-Max, the automaker is walking a clever line, appealing simultaneously to the make-a-statement eco-committed crowd seeking a distinctive-looking car and to the much larger number of customers who just want a good, fuel-efficient vehicle that goes beyond an ordinary Ford Focus.

Report: Foo Fighters do last show for 'long time'

LONDON (AP) ? Music industry online magazine NME says the Foo Fighters have played their "last show for a long time," but an official familiar with the group says it has more concerts scheduled.

As the group wrapped up a gig in Reading, England, on Sunday, Frontman Dave Grohl told the crowd the tour, in support of its latest album "Wasting Light," would be its last ? a comment that has set fans in the Twittersphere alight with concern.

But the official says Grohl's comments were misinterpreted. The official said on condition of anonymity that the band has four U.S. shows in September and that after that it will take some time off "after touring the world for a year."

Grohl is the former drummer for the hugely successful band Nirvana.

Why Arrested Development on Netflix could change everything ...

Whoever might be employing me in the spring of 2013, know this: The moment Netflix debuts the return of Arrested Development, I?m calling in sick. Because on that glorious day, me and the hundreds and thousands of other devotees will be in our pajamas, in front of our laptops and iPads and Xboxes and Rokus, once again enjoying the antics of the Bluth family.

Arrested?s rebirth, over four years in the works, has the potential to completely change the game in terms of the way we regard web content in the future. I mean, cult network sitcom gets a literal second life through the largess of a company that began life as a mail-order DVD service? If you time-traveled to 2006 (the year Fox originally canceled the show), and told this story, no one would believe you.

And yet, it?s happening: scripts have been written, producer/narrator Ron Howard?s Tweeting from the set, and David Cross, on a recent press blitz, said no shortage of interesting things about the series? return, including this to Rolling Stone:

I think it?s going to be 13 episodes, not 10. There?s too much story. Some characters will have two-parters. Everybody sort of participates, sometimes in a bigger way and sometimes in a tiny little thread that goes through everybody else?s stories.

This is the sort of statement that would make a network executive?s head explode, due to the way traditional TV is budgeted and structured on a per-episode basis. But we?re on Netflix?s turf now. Unexplored territory.

Beyond Lilyhammer, which has been renewed for a second season, the industry hasn?t gotten much sense yet of how Netflix?s many high-profile in-the-works projects, such as Arrested, the Eli Roth series Hemlock Grove or the Kevin Spacey-starring House of Cards, will really work out ? especially because the question of how to promote a VOD project is still a bit up in the air.

With theatrical releases, you get premiere dates, big galas. But Netflix is so stealthy about announcing what?s available and what isn?t that websites and email services have been created to update people.

Without doubt, I?ll know what day I?m calling in with the Arrested flu next spring ? it?s impossible to imagine that not being heavily promoted by both the production and Netflix ? but the Netflix experience in general has always boiled down to ?Wait, THAT?S available now? Okay, cool.? Seeing how Netflix adapts to accommodate the original programming they?re launching, while still enabling the casual browsing of the user experience, is a fascinating challenge.

The other element is the fact that like Lilyhammer, all 10-13 episodes of the series will be released at once, setting fans up for epic marathon sessions. The term ?binge viewing? has been coined to describe how many TV fans now consume shows, gulping up entire seasons on DVD or streaming services. It?s a wonderful way to fall in love with a show ? just sinking into it the way you might sink into an epic novel. And Arrested?s new season, according to Cross, sounds designed with just that experience in mind:

I?m not gonna divulge anything, but I know what the stories are and what Mitch [Hurwitz] is doing, and it?s so layered. It?s really audacious and amazing. I think a lot of people will miss the work that is involved, the story, the Venn diagrams that are being created, the domino effect that characters have with each other in their various episodes. I know what he?s doing, and this has never been done on a TV show like this. This makes Lost look like a Spalding Grey monologue. You?ll have to watch each episode more than once.

Given the show?s pre-established track record for hidden jokes and gags, this sounds more than promising.

The AMC series Breaking Bad is a key example of a show that?s grown its audience thanks to binge viewing, indicated by how its ratings have increased with each season, as new viewers discover the show through Netflix. But Vince Gilligan, in a recent interview with KCRW?s The Business, had this to say about the phenomenon:

It?s wonderful, but I do see the worry ? this is a business, it?s show business and if there?s no money to be made, then this wonderful job I have and other jobs like it are going to dry up. So we should all be interested in how they monetize this stuff. It?s wonderful when people binge-watch the show ? I say have at it ? but I do see the companies, not just ours, the various companies concerned that if you?re binge-watching on a DVR, you?re skipping all the commercials. And if the guys who buy the commercials realize that all their commercials are being skipped, they?re going to stop buying commercials.

It?s an attitude you?ll hear elsewhere in the industry ? which may be why Netflix is doubling down on its subscription model. I couldn?t track down the budget for Arrested Development?s new season, but House of Cards?s price tag was reported by some as $100 million, and Hemlock Grove, it?s said, is budgeted at $40 million for 13 episodes ? otherwise known as about $3 million an episode. That?s real TV money ? in fact, it?s the same budget as Breaking Bad.

It?s a long time until the spring of 2013, but looking forward it?s hard to imagine a more important signpost for the convergence of television and the web than Arrested Development. If it succeeds, it?ll legitimize a whole new distribution platform and business model. And if it fails, well, we?ll at least get to see Tobias in his cutoffs again.

The TV singularity approaching us consumers of media is at times a scary one: We?re used to shows that cost millions an episode, but we?re also now used to consuming whatever we want, wherever and whenever we want. Some people think that going forward, these two mindsets won?t be able to co-exist. But Netflix seems to disagree, and the Bluths may be the ones to prove it.

Gold hits 4-1/2 month high on Fed stimulus hopes

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Gold rose to the loftiest level since mid-April on Monday, extending strong gains from last week as expectations for further monetary easing from the U.S. Federal Reserve kept sentiment buoyant.

The Fed had room to deliver additional monetary stimulus to stoke economic growth, said the central bank's chief Ben Bernanke, boosting anticipation for easier monetary policy, which would lure investors to gold, a hedge against inflation as a result of rampant cash-printing.

"There are very strong expectations for the Fed's action, and the technical breakthrough last week will continue to boost prices," said Li Ning, an analyst at Shanghai CIFCO Futures.

Investors will closely watch the central bank symposium due to take place in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, later this week for clues on the next steps central banks will take to curb the euro zone debt crisis and stimulate global growth.

Spot gold was up 0.3 percent at $1,674.89 per ounce by 0324 GMT, after posting a 3.4-percent rise last week.

U.S. gold rose 0.3 percent to $1,677.80.

Technical analysis suggested that spot gold could rise to $1,693 per ounce during the day, said Reuters market analyst Wang Tao.

The European Central Bank is considering setting yield band targets under a new bond-buying programme to allow it to keep its strategy shielded and avoid speculators trying to cash in. Meanwhile, the Bundesbank likened ECB bond-buying plans to a dangerous drug, and a conservative ally of German leader Angela Merkel said Greece should leave the currency bloc by next year.

INVESTOR INTEREST RISES AHEAD OF JACKSON HOLE MEETING

Speculators raised their net long positions in U.S. gold futures and options to 140,126 lots in the week ended August 21, the highest since the beginning of May, said the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Investors also piled into physically backed exchange-traded gold funds, lifting the holdings of gold ETFs tracked by Reuters to a historical high above 71.4 million ounces.

"The key is Jackson Hole," said Nick Trevethan, senior commodity strategist at ANZ in Singapore, "Everyone is expecting Bernanke to play up the possibility and willingness to stimulate."

CFTC data also showed net longs in silver shot up nearly two-thirds to 17,452 lots, the highest level since early April, as silver prices rallied.

Spot silver hit $31.20, the highest in nearly four months, before easing slightly to $31.05, building on a weekly rise of nearly 10 percent, its strongest week since October.

Get More Web Traffic With Optimized YouTube Videos

increase website trafficIn our fourth installment of the How to Get More Website Traffic we are going to be looking at YouTube videos, and in particular, how to actually optimize them so that you get found by laser? targeted prospects who are specifically looking for your product or service, get first page search engine rankings for your videos and literally triple your web traffic.

Now before I get into the video optimization strategies, lets take a look at some of the reasons why video marketing is a total game changer for your business and an online marketing avenue that you do not want to miss:

  • Sales increase by 72% online when video is added. ~Google/MSN
  • With proper optimization, video increases the chance of a front-page Google result by 53 TIMES. ~Forrester
  • According to Cisco, video will increase from 30% of Internet traffic to 90% of Internet traffic by 2013. ~Cisco

Video can convey emotional information, not just factual ? video has the added advantage (over reading text) that it is able to speak to the emotional ?mid-brain?, which is crucial to conveying your message and having it remembered.

?

Now check out this video about how you can get more website traffic by optimizing your videos:

?

And here are the key points to remember:

1. Keyword Research ? I have done a previous video on finding the right keywords that you can check out.

2. Headline ? make sure you craft a compelling, irresistible headline that includes your main keyword

3. Description and tags ? add your main keyword and all sub keywords to your tags. Bonus tip ? find a similar video that has a lot of views, comments and likes and copy their keywords. You will raise your chances of showing up as a ?related video? and getting views by association.

4. A strong Call to action ? every video should have an intention behind it with a strong call to action to get viewers to take action on the intention and purpose of the video. Never assume that people will just ?know? what to do ? make it as clear and specific as possible (and easy too)

5. Getting a transcript ? you can easily get a transcript of your video from Fiverr.com, which you then save as a .txt file and upload to your video ? this helps the search engines find out what your video is about and thus rank it as highly relevant to your topic.

?

Then you want to make sure that you make the most of your online video marketing efforts by having a thorough post creation buzz building plan.?

Next, create additional content to use by creating a video blog based on your video, a short article to publish online using your transcripts, and cut up snippets of your transcript to use as social media updates for weeks or moths to come!

So what you have just done is leveraged that one video to create 4 pieces of online content!

Now hows that for getting online visibility and getting some serious web traffic traction?

You sold? And the best part is this ? it is totally free, simple, and can be done with exactly what you?ve got and where you are at right now. Open your laptop, press record and get your first video out there.

Done.

Rinse, repeat and notice what an incredible website generating strategy this is. It personally accounts for over 50 per cent of my online leads and sales and has even tripled the sales that I make on some of my products.

This is a serous game changer for your biz. Get on it and don?t go leaving that money on the table for your competitors.

Why Adobe Premiere Does Not Edit CinemaDNG ... - Cinescopophilia

?

So you used to edit in Final Cut and then jumped ship to the hot shiny new hipster toy called Adobe Premiere Pro 6, and you want that Blackmagic Cinema Camera so bad don?t you? Or perhaps your?e thinking about filming with any one of a number of new cameras coming out that allow the option of recording your footage in CinemaDNG. Your workflow all sorted then? Shoot on the BMCC/ikonoskop/Digital Bolex/KineRAW/Weisscam and copy the uncompressed RAW images in CinemaDNG format files into Adobe Premiere Pro for an edit session, pump out the video to Vimeo and wait for the pats on the back, right.
Noooooooo?? Right about now you find out that CinemaDNG does not edit in Premiere Pro natively.

From Todd Kopriva one of the Adobe team members:

We got very little interest from our users for CinemaDNG. The BlackMagic camera surprised us at NAB as much as it surprised anyone.

If we find that a lot of people are using that camera and are asking us to natively import CinemaDNG files in Premiere Pro, then we?ll look into it.
For now, you can import CinemaDNG files into After Effects through the Camera Raw plug-in, which comes with After Effects. The performance is very poor, though, which is one of the reasons that we haven?t been moving forward with CinemaDNG in Premiere Pro.

When pushed as to why an Adobe product like CinemaDNG would not work straight out of the box in Premiere Pro, Todd replied:

I think that you?re over-estimating how much the format is ?our? format. We did some early work on the format and then made it an open-source format for others to develop as they saw fit. We didn?t push it and don?t intend to do so, any more than we would for any other open standard. It has received very little uptake, with only a couple of recent exceptions.
In the meantime, many competing formats have been taken up with great success, and we need to focus our limited resources on making sure that formats that are already very popular are supported as well as possible.

So double up on your storage space and take the phone off the hook, as you just lost money to thirsty double handling Gigabytes and any spare time you ever had just to edit a very simple file.

Well one way to save the day for now if you still want to use Adobe to edit CinemaDNG, is by adopting a workflow set out by Theo Lipfert:

If you really require your newly bought CinemaDNG capable camera to work in Premiere Pro then send Adobe a brief note letting them know just that. The more people that write to Adobe asking for CinemaDNG to work in Premiere Pro natively the quicker it might just happen.

Fill out the Adobe Wish List to get your request heard.

Also download CinemaDNG Workflow from Adobe to help you with your editing process.

If you like the After Effects to FCP route instead of Premiere then try this CinemaDNG workflow by Billy from Art War Entertainment:

If Adobe is not your first choice for editing CinemaDNG then try a FCP and Resolve workflow thanks to Decoy studios:

Of course if you do buy the Blackmagic Cinema Camera then happy happy joy joy it comes with DaVinci Resolve free of charge.
You may also like to try CineForm, MXF4MAC, DanCad3D, and course try Adobe LightRoom, to de-Bayer the DNG frames with colour correction and save the frames into other file formats such as ProRes for use with Adobe Premiere Pro.

Enjoy!

Q & A: Finding Happiness in Yourself & Relationships

It is a funny thing. I do love to blog about weddings and flowers and pretty but I get the biggest response about relationship posts. I know. It surprises me too. I am absolutely no expert on love but I have lived a little. I have also dated. I also have found an amazing man to spend my life with.

So the biggest thing that I have to catch up on for Thursday Q & A are relationship topics. I will try my best but can I repeat again that I am no expert. Sound advice time.

Q. I have been with the same man for quite sometime. Sometimes I am happy and sometimes I am not. I seem to be in a funk. How do I know if I am sticking around for the right reasons? What do I do?

A. First, I hope I don't talk your ear off. I can confidentially say that each and every relationship is different. I feel your decision on what to do in your relationship is specific to you and may not be the same for another couple. You should also understand that your relationship is 100% different than everyone else?so do not compare. Smiling pictures of a couple on Facebook doesn't equal a happy couple. Trust me.

Now that you are not comparing yourself to someone else you have to understand the next thing I am about to say. I have said it on this blog. I have preached it to my friends. I have learned it myself. I have a t-shirt that says it. Well maybe not that last thing but understand this: You cannot be the best you or offer all of yourself to another person until you are confident and happy with who you are and know what you stand for. I will say this until I am blue in the face. If you are not a confident woman, if you do not know who you are, if you do not have a sense of what your beliefs are then you will not be able to be 100% in a romantic relationship and that relationship will not satisfy you either. Yes, your sense of self will adapt over the years. Yes, your taste in style will change but you are who you are. You should be open to growth but regardless of all these factors, you should be happy.

If you are dating: Are you not seeing eye to eye with your other half? Are you enjoying your time with him or her? Are you smiling and feeling happy? Sometimes you think you are but I ask you to look a little deeper. If you are happy 100% I am so happy for you. If you are struggling, this relationship may not be for you. Here is the kicker: only you know the answer to whether your relationship is the right relationship. Be true to yourself. I was the gal whose best friends all got marries or engaged after college. I could have done that with the guy I was dating but thank goodness I didn't! I would have missed out on Rusty. You decide your fate and that should include a really good and dreamy guy.

If you are married: This one is hard. I couldn't imagine marrying someone who didn't make me laugh 24/7 but I also know people change. Remember that things will change in your relationship but it should be for the better. Your taste for life may change but with that, your partner should be right there with you. If you aren't happy, try talking with a mutual party like a mentor or counselor. I believe that if both parties try your marriage can be a happy one. We are women and we are emotional. When you have a spat with your husband try to remember that it isn't the end of the world. Sometimes our emotions get the best of us and we think things are worse than they are. If things are truly bad then you need to try every possible resource to improving your partnership. You both should be happy and healthy!

SO what if the problem is not your relationship but your happiness? I understand. I know first hand what it is like to struggle with what you want to do in life. A few ideas for finding happiness: write down what you enjoy and go from there. If your list involves taking pictures maybe photography could be a new hobby. Try volunteering. I can guarantee that will bring you joy. A mother of three? Start a mommy and baby coffee house date or a book club. Find your outlet. I think sometimes we know what would make us happy but it may scare you a bit. It may seem bigger than yourself. That is good! Fight fear. Remember that you deserve happiness but you also have to be patient and strong when it comes to finding your niche.

I hope that this post makes sense. I truly believe that every woman can be smiling and that is what makes you beautiful ladies. Happy Thursday!

Mental health nurse 'had sexual relationship' with patient - News - STV

A mental health nurse is facing a misconduct hearing after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a patient.

Linda Thomson worked on the Corgarff Ward at the Royal Cornhill Hospital in Aberdeen when she is said to have had the relationship in 2009.

She will face ten charges at a hearing in Edinburgh next week.

It is said the pair had a sexual relationship between February and April 2009. In January of the same year, Thomson is accused of visiting the patient?s flat and exchanging numbers with them.

She is said to have been given a key to their flat sometime between January and May 2009.

The nurse is also said to have had dinner with the patient, gone to football matches and pubs and drank cava with them between January and April 2009.

Between the same months, she is said to have kissed, cuddled and engaged in sexual relations with the patient. The pair also allegedly stayed at each others houses between February and April that year.

Thomson is also accused of bringing the patient back gifts from a holiday she went on in March 2009.

The nurse's actions are said to have impaired her "fitness to practice".

A misconduct hearing of the Nursing and Midwifery Council will take place between August 28 and 30.

The Corgarff Ward treats adults with acute mental health problems.

Ancient fossils reveal how the mollusc got its teeth

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? The radula sounds like something from a horror movie -- a conveyor belt lined with hundreds of rows of interlocking teeth. In fact, radulas are found in the mouths of most molluscs, from the giant squid to the garden snail. Now, a "prototype" radula found in 500-million-year-old fossils studied by University of Toronto graduate student Martin Smith, shows that the earliest radula was not a flesh-rasping terror, but a tool for humbly scooping food from the muddy sea floor.

The Cambrian animals Odontogriphus and Wiwaxia might not have been much to look at -- the former a naked slug, the latter a creeping bottom-dweller covered with spines and scales. Despite the hundreds of fossil specimens collected from the Canadian Rockies by the Royal Ontario Museum, scientists could not agree whether they represented early molluscs, relatives of the earthworm, or an evolutionary dead-end. Smith, a PhD candidate in U of T's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and author of a study published this week in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, employed a new, non-destructive type of Electron Microscopy to reveal the new details.

"I put the fossils in the microscope, and the mouth parts just leaped out," says Smith, a PhD candidate in U of T's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. "You could see details you'd never guess were there if you just had a normal microscope."

After examining some 300 fossils, Smith was able not just to reconstruct the mouthparts, but work out how they grew. "The fossils are squashed completely flat, which makes them really hard to reconstruct in 3D," says Smith. "I surrounded myself with micrographs of the mouth parts and lumps of plasticine, and spent weeks trying to come up with a model that made sense of the fossils."

The new observations demonstrated that the mouthparts consisted of two to three rows of 17 similarly-shaped teeth, with a symmetrical central tooth and smaller teeth on the edges. The teeth would have moved round the end of a tongue in the conveyor-belt fashion seen in molluscs today, scooping food -- algae or detritus -- from the muddy sea floor. By establishing how the teeth were arranged, moved, grew, and were replaced, Smith was able to demonstrate that they formed a shorter and squatter forerunner to the modern radula.

"When I set out, I just hoped to be a bit closer to knowing what these mysterious fossils were," says Smith. "Now, with this picture of the earliest radula, we are one step closer to understanding where the molluscs came from and how they became so successful today."

The Benefits of Garage Storage Systems

Garage storage is often at a premium. If you have shelving, you may be one-step ahead of everyone else. However, the bare walls and limited spaces can be transformed into an organized, well-designed space that you have no concerns about. In fact, you may not even feel bad when you leave the door open for the neighbors to see into it. If you are looking for a few great ways to clean up, organize, and protect this space of your home, the right system is the route to take.

Don't Do It Alone

One of the most important things to remember is that you do not have to design, install and put together garage storage on your own. This is something you should hire a professional to do for you or at least to help you to design. The reasons are simple. There are many types of systems and organizational tools available and each one can provide for different needs. For example, your space may need cabinetry. Others may need hooks on the wall for storage. Shelving, containers, and even ball holders are all options to consider. A professional can help you to organize the space and select the right types of elements for it.

Why Invest?

The investment in this type of product may not seem like a big deal. However, many garages lack any type of space to put things away and that is the leading cause of messy, poorly organized spaces. If you have to step over things to get into and out of the home, you need this type of service. If you spend an hour before practice each day searching for sports gear, you will benefit from this type of organization. If you find yourself always lost when it comes to finding tools, this is a great opportunity to never have to spend more time looking for a tool than it takes to get the job done. Further, if you have paint, chemicals, dangerous power tools or other items within this space that need to be moved out of the way and secured from children, you most definitely need this type of organization.

In many cases, the benefits of investing in garage storage are easy to see. You simply need to find the right type of organizational products to help you through the process. To do this, invest in a company that will come to you and offer advice and guidance. They can put the storage options in place for you, too. Some will even help you to get the space all set up so there is no reason for you to ever search for those tools again. Image what it would be like if people could put cars in garages because they were organized.

UK man who failed to overturn euthanasia law dies

LONDON (AP) ? Tony Nicklinson, paralyzed and unable to speak, found life so unbearable he wanted to die. On Wednesday, the 58-year-old Briton got his wish.

His family said he died of pneumonia at home.

In January, Nicklinson asked the High Court to declare that any doctor who killed him with his consent would not be charged with murder. Last week, the court rejected his request, a decision that Nicklinson said had left him "devastated and heartbroken."

Nicklinson was a former corporate manager and rugby player who suffered a stroke in 2005 that left him with locked-in syndrome. He was unable to speak or move below his neck and required constant care. Nicklinson communicated mostly by blinking, although his mind had remained unaffected and his condition was not terminal.

Nicklinson had argued that British law violated his right to "private and family life" as guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights, on the ground that being able to choose how to die is a matter of personal autonomy. He had previously described his life as "a living nightmare."

One of his daughters said on Twitter that before he died, Nicklinson had asked them to tweet "Goodbye world the time has come, I had some fun."

Police said they would not be investigating Nicklinson's death. "We can confirm he passed away," a police spokesman said on customary condition of anonymity. "His death certificate has been signed by a doctor, so it is not a matter for Wiltshire Police or the coroner."

Saimo Chahal, Nicklinson's lawyer, said his health had deteriorated over the week-end after he caught pneumonia. Nicklinson had legal documents drawn up in 2004 to refuse any life-saving treatment. He had also been refusing food since last week.

Nicklinson had said that even if he were granted the right to die, he would not want to be killed immediately, but just wanted to know that the option existed.

Experts weren't sure what impact, if any, his death might have on the ongoing euthanasia debate in Britain.

Penney Lewis, a law professor at King's College London, said previous deaths of euthanasia advocates didn't have any effect on changing laws to allow the practice.

"The evidence seems to be that parliaments are not galvanized into action by the deaths of those who have been fighting for (euthanasia) legalization," she said in an email. Nicklinson "was so distressed by the High Court decision, it is sad to think he died while still absorbing that."

In Europe, only Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands allow euthanasia. Switzerland allows assisted suicide and is the only country that helps foreigners die at a clinic near Zurich.
