Best New Year's 2013 celebration apps for iPhone

Best New Year's 2013 celebration apps for iPhone

As we head into the year 2013, you're probably finalizing your plans for New Year's Eve, but have you considered how you're going to use your iPhone during the celebration? Whether you're going out for a night on the town, attending a house party, or staying home, we have rounded up some iPhone apps that will help you ring in the new year.

Times Square Official New Year's Eve Ball App - 2013

In America, the place to be on New Year's Eve is Times Square in New York City, but very few of us actually get to be there and instead watched the yearly Ball Drop on our televisions. Well, now you can watch from your iPhone as well! With the Times Square Official New Year's Eve Ball App - 2013 you can participate in the festivities by submitting your own photos (that may be featured on the Toshiba Vision screen atop Times Square, directly below the Ball), send New Years Eve ecards, and watch live streaming of the evens in Times Square.

New Year's Live

New Year's Live an app by EarthCam that present exclusive webcams of New Year's 2014 celebrations live around the world, including Time Square in New York City. The cameras include audio so you can hear countdowns from the crowd and cheers and noise as the clock strikes midnight. New Year's Live also includes a photo booth that lets you have fun taking pictures with New Year's Eve costume pieces, a Party Box for making noise at midnight, and more.

Uber

New Year's Eve and alcohol go hand-in-hand, but driving does not fit into that equation -- and that's where Uber comes in. With Uber, you can request a taxi, classic black sedan, or SUV to pick you and your friends up. The app is super easy to use, even in a drunken state, and the fare will automatically be charged to your credit card at the end of the ride so that you have one less thing to think about.

Mixology/Mixologist Drink & Cocktail Recipes

Staying home and hosting a party instead hitting the town? Then Mixology or Mixologist will help you be the best bartender ever. It features thousands of recipes and a liquor cabinet feature that filters drinks that you can make based on the ingredients you have on hand. The difference between the free version, Mixology, and the paid version, Mixologist, is that Mixologist also includes a custom drinks feature, more ways to choose random drinks, and no ads.

2012 QUIZ

2012 QUIZ is a trivia game about this past year including topics ranging from the Grammy Award, the Olympics, hurricane Sandy, Music, Movies, and more. The free version includes a smaller set of questions as a way to allow you to try before you buy, and the $2.99 upgrade unlocks more than 200 questions, a score sheet, and strips away the ads. 2012 Quiz is a great way to have some fun during a New Year's party... you could even turn it into a drinking game!

Your favorite New Year's Eve celebration app?

Are there any other apps you plan to use this New Year's Eve? We want to know about them! If you pick any of these ones up, let us know what you think!

Cosmic Religions for Space Colonization

I recommend watching the one-hour film Knocking on Heaven?s Door, by George Carey, aired by the BBC in 2011, to all space enthusiasts interested in the history of the Russian space program and our future out there in the universe. The film zeroes in on the powerful role that religion can play in advancing radical scientific visions.

eso-stars

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the father of the Russian space program, was a brilliant scientist and engineer, but his motivation and drive came from his philosophical convictions, his belief in humanity?s destiny to leave the Earth and colonize the universe, and his vision of a deep unity between man and the cosmos.

The real protagonist of Carey?s film is Tsiolkovsky?s mentor, Nikolai Fedorov, who taught that science would make us immortal. The film shows how the Russian space program was strongly inspired by Cosmist philosophers and mystics, who believed that we should evolve into super-humans who could leave our overcrowded planet to colonize the universe. I recently talked to Carey about this film and related projects ? he said that he researched Cosmism as a neutral observer who reports what he finds, but I think the film shows that he liked what he found.

Some reprehensible pirates tell me that Carey?s Knocking on Heaven?s Door is easy to find on the Torrent networks. There is also a streaming version on Vimeo.

Fedorov suggested that science was a tool given to us by God to enable us to resurrect the dead and, as promised, enjoy immortal life. He added that because the Earth could not sustain a population that never died, we must first learn to conquer space. His ideas about human evolution, and in particular the idea that humans should take control of the process and direct it towards their own goals, inspired generations of Russian scientists and led directly to contemporary transhumanism. See also this interesting review and discussion?of Fedorov?s ideas on Charlie Stross? blog.

Carey?s film captures the popular enthusiasm for space in the Soviet Union of the 60s. We had the same enthusiasm in the West at the time, and God knows we could use it now, all over the planet. I think contemporary versions of Cosmist philosophy could renew our enthusiasm and drive for space.

One problem is that Cosmism not only sounds like religion, but was actually a spinoff of Russian Orthodox Christianity. This may upset those space enthusiasts who are also militant atheists but, as recently noted by Charlie Jane Anders on io9, smug atheists should read more science fiction. ?A lot of the best science fiction is intensely ?cosmic,? conveying just how huge and unknowable the universe is, and how little we still understand it,? says Anders. ?In a sense, the huge cosmic imagery of science fiction resembles some of the best religious paintings.?

I think atheists are right when they point an accusing finger to the many evil things done by organized religions. But I believe that evil does not come from the honest, heartfelt faith of believers, who have the right to pursue happiness, and are often nice and compassionate persons. Evil, in religion like everywhere else, comes from evil persons with power over others.

Cosmism is not religion in a conventional sense, but highly imaginative science. Richard Dawkins (yes, Dawkins, the leading atheist thinker) thinks that it?s highly plausible that in the universe there are God-like creatures. In The God Delusion, he writes: ?Whether we ever get to know them or not, there are very probably alien civilizations that are superhuman, to the point of being god-like in ways that exceed anything a theologian could possibly imagine.?

In total agreement with Dawkins, I am persuaded that ?future magic? technologies will permit achieving, by scientific means, most of the promises of religions ? and many amazing things that no human religion ever dreamed. If there are God-like beings in the universe, I think we should go and meet them out there, and try to become God-like beings ourselves.

Sociologist William Sims Bainbridge, NSF program manager and editor of the first NBIC Converging Technologies report, thinks that religion of a certain kind was instrumental in the rise of science and modern technology, and that religion of a certain kind will be instrumental in our expansion to the stars. In a 2009 paper on Religion for a Galactic Civilization, he writes:

?Progress in spaceflight technology has halted at a level that is insufficient for colonization of the solar system, let alone for voyages to the stars? We need a new definition of spaceflight that will energize investment and innovation. I suggest a return to the traditional view: The heavens are a sacred realm, that we should enter in order to transcend death.?

?To become fully interplanetary, let alone interstellar, our society would need another leap?and it needs that leap very soon before world culture ossifies into secure uniformity, or decays into absolute chaos. We need a new spaceflight social movement capable of giving a sense of transcendent purpose to dominant sectors of the society.

?Religion will continue to influence the course of progress, and creation of a galactic civilization may depend upon the emergence of a galactic religion capable of motivating society for the centuries required to accomplish that great project. This religion would be a very demanding social movement, and will require extreme discipline from its members, so for purposes of this essay I will call it The Cosmic Order.

?It is wrong to feel that irrational religion must always be a hindrance to progress. I have suggested that only a transcendent, impractical, radical religion can take us to the stars. The alternative is one or another form of ugly death. A successful outcome depends on a kind of lucky insanity, and it is quite unlikely. But for our species, at least it is still possible.?

In my article Uploaded e-crews for interstellar missions on KurzweilAI, republished by io9 as Why we should send uploaded astronauts on interstellar missions, I propose a strategy for cost-effective interstellar missions: to do without the wetware bodies of the crew, and send only their minds to the stars, their software, uploaded to advanced ?computronium? circuitry in miniature starships. This will be a step in the right direction, because it seems likely that biological intelligence is only a transitory phenomenon, and advanced civilizations among the stars are probably post-biological in nature.

Bainbridge agrees. At a space policy symposium in 2001, he said that the gradual merging of human beings with their computers over the next century gives rise to the prospect of interstellar immortality. Then he teamed up with polymath genius Martine Rothblatt, a very successful space and biotechnology entrepreneur and a relentless advocate of the rights of transgendered persons, to develop the Bainbridge-Rothblatt ?mindfile? approach to mind uploading.

?A mindfile is the sum of saved digital reflections about you,? says Martine Rothblatt. ?All of the stored emails, chats, texts, IMs and blogs that you write are part of your mindfile. All of the uploaded photos, slide shows and movies that involve you are part of your mindfile. Your search histories, clicked selections and online purchases, if saved, are part of your mindfile. Your digital life is your mindfile.? Rothblatt believes that?future AI technology will be able to merge the information stored in the mindfile with ?human firmware,? a generic model of a human mind, and bring you back to life.

Rothblatt?s LifeNaut and CyBeRev websites offer a growing array of services for the creation and storage of mindfiles, based on Bainbridge?s research on personality capture. I have strong reservations on the practical possibility to capture enough of a personality with today?s slow interfaces, but future brain scanning and BCI technologies will permit a much faster capture of memories, thoughts and feelings, and I can imagine how future AI technology may be able to patch incomplete information.

Rothblatt founded Terasem, a scientific religion strongly reminiscent of Fedorov?s Cosmism and Bainbridge?s Cosmic Order, to advance space colonization and ?soft uploading? via mindfiles. One of the services of Terasem is beaming mindfiles to space in the hope that advanced civilizations, Dawkins? God-like super aliens, may one day decode them and bring them back to life, much like a police sketch artist creates a realistic photo from a few clues. The same technology will be used by our descendants to beam uploaded astronauts to stellar colonies and starships.

Nation running out of ammo - Legal Insurrection

Reaction to threats by Senator Dianne Feinstein and others to ban certain weapons and serverely restrict ownership of guns generally has caused a run on gun stores, as is widely reported.

Less reported is the run on ammunition, leaving ammunition inventories down 93% since election day.

So reports Traction Control blog, Plunge! Ammunition Levels Less Than 10% of Pre-Election Levels:

Ammunition Stock levels have fallen by more than 90% from the pre-Election Day levels. Less than 10% remains available. Available Ammunition links will be updated throughout the day.

Handguns are down by 80%, Long Guns by 63% for an overall 72.2% reduction in firearms inventories.

AR pattern rifles are becoming particularly difficult to source.

Plunge902

In some locations, ammunition is hard to find:

Gun buyers in Houston have bought up the entire inventory of AR guns. It is not just the guns. The ammunition is sold out. The magazines are sold out, and not just the magazines that hold 30 or more rounds. Even finding a 10-round magazine is elusive. And ammunition? The smaller boxes of ammunition in the 223-556 calibers may be found, but not the larger boxes. Try calling Top Gun, Academy, Carter Country and other stores and you will get more or less the same answer: ?We are sold out entirely, we have no idea when we are getting new stock in, and we have no idea what the pricing will be.? Even the online sites that deal in guns and ammo are now low on inventory as sales have spiked.

Investors are noticing what it will mean for ammunition manufacturers in 2013:

Right now, ammo is severely constrained in all major retail stores and online. Local checks by the author at multiple Academy Sports and Outdoors, (which is owned by (KKR), Walmart (WMT), and Dicks Sporting Goods (DKS) have all meet with the same feedback ? gun sales, especially of AR-type weapons and pistols, are highly elevated, with some places being sold out of AR-type weapons. Ammo is scarce for popular rounds such as 9mm, .40 cal, .223, and 7.62?39.

Online stores such as cheaperthandirt.com are also sold out on many popular rounds. We had to go all the way to the 9th product page to find 9mm in a 50 round box for sale! ?

Clearly, ammo is in high demand right now, and from our point of view, it has never been harder to find.

Las Vegas police expect to ID girl's body Friday

This undated photo provided by the Las Vegas Police Department shows Jade Moris, 10, who police are searching for after she failed to return home Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, from a shopping trip with a woman arrested that night and accused of slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip. (AP) ? Police investigating the disappearance of a 10-year-old Las Vegas girl expect to know Friday if it was her body that was found in an undeveloped housing tract.

Authorities couldn't immediately confirm that the body belonged to Jade Morris when it was discovered Thursday, Las Vegas police homicide Capt. Chris Jones said.

But, "I can tell you that the likelihood is that this is our victim," Jones said. He said the body belongs to a black girl, and Jade was black.

Coroner Michael Murphy said he expected to make a positive identification Friday, the same day that Brenda Stokes, the woman Jade was last seen with, appears in court on charges that she slashed a co-worker with razor blades at the Bellagio resort casino.

Jade's family last saw her at about 5 p.m. Dec. 21, when Stokes picked her up for a shopping outing, police said. Police said Stokes was a trusted friend of the girl's father, and family members have told reporters that the two dated for several years.

Stokes, who also uses the name Brenda Wilson, was arrested later that night after she was accused of slashing the co-worker.

Stokes, 50, is now in jail, and Jones said she has not cooperated in the investigation of the girl's whereabouts.

A passer-by called 911 about noon Thursday, and North Las Vegas police found a girl's body in brush near palm trees in a small traffic circle near Dorrell Lane and North Fifth Street.

The location is a short distance from the northern 215 Beltway and about 10 miles from the downtown Las Vegas outlet mall off Interstate 15 where Stokes was to have taken the girl shopping.

Attempts by The Associated Press to reach family members Thursday were unsuccessful.

Stokes picked up the girl at about 5 p.m., and two hours later returned to another friend the red 2007 Saab sedan that she borrowed for the shopping trip, Jones said.

Later, Stokes got a ride with a friend to the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip, where she was arrested after authorities say she attacked a female co-worker, Joyce Rhone, with a razor in each hand as Rhone dealt blackjack about 9:30 p.m.

Rhone, 44, was hospitalized with deep cuts on her face, including one from her ear to the edge of her mouth. A police arrest report said Rhone also had several smaller cuts around her right eye.

Records show that Stokes was being held on $60,000 bail at the Clark County jail on felony battery with a weapon, burglary and mayhem charges that could get her decades in prison.

She told a judge Wednesday that she had not obtained a lawyer. She was due again in Las Vegas Justice Court on Friday morning.

The arrest report says casino video shows Stokes attacking Rhone before a casino patron and security officers intervene. Officer Marcus Martin said the video is evidence that may be shown by prosecutors in court but will not be made public by police.

Police said Stokes later told investigators that she attacked Rhone over harassing phone calls and an unspecified betrayal that ended their seven-year friendship.

Stokes also told police she visited her doctor last week, seeking to be admitted to a hospital "due to feeling like she wanted to hurt someone."

China court orders Apple to pay in rights dispute

(AP) ? A Chinese court has ordered Apple Inc. to pay 1.03 million yuan ($165,000) to eight Chinese writers and two companies who say unlicensed copies of their work were distributed through Apple's online store.

The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court ruled Thursday that Apple violated the writers' copyrights by allowing applications containing their work to be distributed through its App Store, according to an official who answered the phone at the court and said he was the judge in the case. He refused to give his name, as is common among Chinese officials.

The award was less than the 12 million yuan ($1.9 million) sought by the authors. The case grouped together eight lawsuits filed by them and their publishers.

An Apple spokeswoman, Carolyn Wu, said the company's managers "take copyright infringement complaints very seriously." She declined to say whether the company would appeal.

Unlicensed copying of books, music, software and other products is widespread in China despite repeated government promises to stamp out violations.

Apple's agreement with application developers requires them to confirm they have obtained rights to material distributed through the company's App Store.

"We're always updating our service to better assist content owners in protecting their rights," Wu said.

The Chinese writers said they saw applications containing unlicensed versions of their books last year.

In November, a court ordered Apple to pay 520,000 yuan ($84,000) to the Encyclopedia of China Publishing House for copyright infringement in a separate case. Apple is appealing, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

In the latest case, the Beijing court awarded 605,000 yuan ($97,500) to one company and 21,500 yuan ($3,450) to the second, according to the court official.

The biggest individual judgment went to writer Han Ailian, who was awarded 186,000 yuan ($30,000).

China satellite navigation starts services to Asia

3 hrs.

A Chinese satellite navigation network created to eventually compete with America's Global Positioning System has started offering services to Asian users outside the country.?

The network's spokesman, Ran Chengqi, said in a press briefing that the Beidou system is offering from Thursday services including positioning, navigation, time and text messaging to users in the Asia-Pacific region.

China expects Beidou to generate a 400 billion yuan ($63 billion) annual market for services to the transport, meteorology and telecommunications sectors.

China, and especially its military, have long been wary of relying on the United States' dominant GPS network, fearing that Washington might take the system offline in a conflict or an emergency.
