9 Pasta Tips And Tricks - ArticlesWide.com

1. Buy the right pasta! To know how to make the pasta in the best way possible, one must know not to hold back on the buying part. Every pasta recipe will require a specific kind of pasta and buying the one with 100% semolina is the best option. It might be a little more expensive but itll make all the difference when you cook it.

2. Use a lot of water when youre boiling the pasta. If you do it in a large enough pot then you can ensure that the pasta doesnt get sticky and you dont end up with a mess. Overdone pasta ruins the taste of the final dish, no matter which kind of noodle you use, you have to know how to make pasta correctly. Boiling pasta perfectly is vital to every pasta recipe!

3. Add salt to the boiling water. It may not seem like it, but all authentic Italian pasta recipes will taste much better and have a lot more flavour if you just adhere to this one rule.

4. Do NOT add oil to the water. When youre boiling the pasta, adding oil will ruin the taste. The oil clings to the pasta and doesnt allow the sauce to add any flavour. Your pasta will not stick to each other if you just stir, adding oil will ruin any decent pasta recipe.

5. Make sure you store some of the boiled water after the pastas cooked. The water adds to the taste when you use it for making the sauce and enhances every recipe of pasta for the better.

6. Never cook your pasta so much that its overdone. It should be done al dente and knowing how to cook the pasta and how much is extremely important to the entire dish.

7. Different sauces call for different pastas. All pasta recipes should specify which pasta to use and if they dont, then remember that smooth sauces call for long noodles and chunky sauces go with the ones that have contours. This helps in getting the sauce to mix with the pasta.

8. Dont add too much sauce. This cannot be stressed enough. Adding too much sauce takes away from the flavour of the pasta, which is actually the primary element of any pasta recipe.

9. Always serve pasta when its hot! It tastes the best and you dont want to compromise on your hard work.

New maps depict potential worldwide coral bleaching by 2056

Feb. 25, 2013 ? In a study published February 24 in Nature Climate Change researchers used the latest emissions scenarios and climate models to show how varying levels of carbon emissions are likely to result in more frequent and severe coral bleaching events.

Large-scale 'mass' bleaching events on coral reefs are caused by higher-than-normal sea temperatures. High temperatures make light toxic to the algae that reside within the corals. The algae, called 'zooxanthellae', provide food and give corals their bright colors. When the algae are expelled or retained but in low densities, the corals can starve and eventually die. Bleaching events caused a reported 16 percent loss of the world's coral reefs in 1998 according to the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network.

If carbon emissions stay on the current path most of the world's coral reefs (74 percent) are projected to experience coral bleaching conditions annually by 2045, results of the study show. The study used climate model ensembles from the upcoming Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Around a quarter of coral reefs are likely to experience bleaching events annually five or more years earlier than the median year, and these reefs in northwestern Australia, Papau New Guinea, and some equatorial Pacific islands like Tokelau, may require urgent attention, researchers warn.

"Coral reefs in parts of the western Indian Ocean, French Polynesia and the southern Great Barrier Reef, have been identified as temporary refugia from rising sea surface temperatures," said Ruben van Hooidonk, Ph.D., from the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami and NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory. "These locations are not projected to experience bleaching events annually until five or more years later than the median year of 2040, with one reef location in the Austral Islands of French Polynesia protected from the onset of annual coral bleaching conditions until 2056."

The findings emphasize that without significant reductions in emissions most coral reefs are at risk, according to the study. A reduction of carbon emissions would delay annual bleaching events more than two decades in nearly a quarter (23 percent) of the world's reef areas, the research shows.

"Our projections indicate that nearly all coral reef locations would experience annual bleaching later than 2040 under scenarios with lower greenhouse gas emissions." said Jeffrey Maynard, Ph.D., from the Centre de Recherches Insulaires et Observatoire de l'Environnement (CRIOBE) in Moorea, French Polynesia. "For 394 reef locations (of 1707 used in the study) this amounts to at least two more decades in which some reefs might conceivably be able to improve their capacity to adapt to the projected changes."

"More so than any result to date, this highlights and quantifies the potential benefits for reefs of reducing emissions in terms of reduced exposure to stressful reef temperatures."

"This study represents the most up-to-date understanding of spatial variability in the effects of rising temperatures on coral reefs on a global scale," said researcher Serge Planes, Ph.D., also from the French research institute CRIOBE in French Polynesia.

The researchers involved in the study all concur that projections that combine the threats posed to reefs by increases in sea temperature and ocean acidification will further resolve where temporary refugia may exist.

With Pope Benedict's retirement, the where is clearer than the how

It is about to become the world's most famous retirement home, its occupant the world's most famous retiree.

A former nunnery set within the stone walls of the Vatican is being extensively refurbished by workers in preparation for the arrival of Benedict XVI, who steps down as Pope and head of the world?s 1.2 billion Catholics on Thursday.

The 85-year-old German pontiff?s decision to live out the rest of his days just a few hundred yards from where his successor will guide the crisis-hit Church has thrown up some highly awkward questions for the Holy See.

Will the ex-Pope interfere in his replacement?s affairs? How will they greet each other when they bump into each other in the Vatican gardens or anywhere else in the tiny sovereign nation? And will Benedict become a sort of shadow Pope, his presence looming large over the new papacy?

RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about the Catholic Church? Take our quiz!

Vatican officials insist that Benedict plans to adopt a quiet life of prayer and reflection and that he will not meddle in the affairs of the Holy See.

But at his last ever Sunday address today, Benedict assured 100,000 people crowding St Peter?s Square that he would not be ?abandoning? the Church.

He raised questions about exactly what his role will be when he told the faithful that he would "continue to serve it [the Church] with the same dedication and the same love which I have tried to do so until now, but in a way more suitable to my age and to my strength."

A FORMER NUNNERY, WITH A VIEW

Whatever his role turns out to be, it will be performed in comfort. The three-story nunnery, which has an adjoining chapel, boasts a study, a library, and living quarters for the band of personal staff that Benedict will bring with him from his papal apartments.

Set on a hill within the Vatican City State, it commands wonderful views of the terracotta rooftops of Rome, the Spanish Steps, and the distant Apennine mountains, which at this time of year are coated in glistening snow.

Gardeners were busy weeding and trimming the surrounding gardens and a cement mixer churned away in the driveway which leads to the entrance of the residence.

Mature palm trees and umbrella pines provide shade and the roof of the Sistine Chapel looms so close it almost seems to be in touching distance.

It is there that 116 cardinals will gather next month to elect Benedict?s successor in a secretive, centuries-old process known as a conclave. (Read here for how a conclave works.)

Past conclaves have lasted for weeks and occasionally ended in fist fights between feuding cardinals. In modern times, it is rarely more than a few days before white smokes wafts from a chimney stack on the Sistine Chapel?s roof, signaling the election of a new Pope.

FIRST, TO A CASTLE

Benedict will not move into the ex-convent immediately. On Thursday afternoon at around 5 pm local time he will be flown by helicopter to Castel Gandolfo, a magnificent castle which sits on the lip of a steep-sided extinct volcano.

It is the traditional summer residence of the papacy and has been used by successive popes for 400 years to escape the squalor, heat, and intrigue of Rome.

Benedict is expected to spend around two months living in the castle, while renovations to the nunnery are completed.

Attached to the castle is a huge estate made up of landscaped gardens, box hedges, mature oak trees, fish ponds, and fountains ? a perfect place for Benedict to indulge in long contemplative walks and contemplate the ramifications of his historic resignation.

There is even a small model farm, consisting of a freshly-planted vineyard, greenhouses, orange and lemon trees, and a herd of 25 Friesian cows, which are prized for their milk and yogurt.

A broad, shaded terrace, built over the remains of a Roman villa constructed by the Emperor Domitian, offers views of the Mediterranean. ?There are also the remains of a Roman theater, which was excavated in the 1970s,? says Pier Paolo Turoli, the administrator of the estate.

Benedict will live in an apartment within the castle, the oldest parts of which date back to the 13th century.

?It was acquired by the Vatican in 1596 when the Savelli family, who owned it, were unable to pay a debt to the Papacy,? says Saverio Petrillo, whose official title is director of the Papal villas.

When Benedict's helicopter arrives at the estate on Thursday he will be driven to the castle, which looms imposingly over the main piazza of the tiny village of Castel Gandolfo.

He will appear at a balcony over the entrance gate and greet thousands of well-wishers crammed into the cobbled square.

FINAL HOURS AS POPE

Then he will pray in the private chapel as the final moments of his pontificate tick away ? at 8 pm precisely local time, he will cease to be Pope and he will no longer be Benedict XVI, the 264th successor to St. Peter.

Vatican officials say he will pray, study, and write during his retirement. He has produced several books, the last one the final part of a trilogy on the life of Christ.

Benedict has said he will live "hidden from the world," but Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi has said he could provide "spiritual guidance" to his successor.

His retirement will certainly be more opulent than that enjoyed by the tiny number of Popes who have resigned in the past.

When Celestine V resigned after a few months in 1294 and returned to his former life as a hermit, he was hounded by the Church, with his successor fearing he could be a threat and set up as an anti-Pope.

He was captured after an attempt to flee to Dalmatia and imprisoned in a castle south of Rome, where he died a few months later.

It is widely believed that an unnamed character in Dante's Inferno refers to Celestine; Dante consigned the man to Hell for his "great refusal."

Benedict's resignation may have been an ecclesiastical bombshell, but perhaps not even his sternest critics would wish a similar fate on him.

Zimbabwe says it has found funds for a referendum

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? Zimbabwe's broke coalition government says it has raised enough money privately to pay for a referendum on a new constitution scheduled March 16.

Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa said the vote, just three weeks away, "will not be stopped because of lack of money," the state Sunday Mail newspaper reported.

Chinamasa said the financing was "sourced locally" from commercial and business interests after the United Nations and possible outside donors weren't given enough time to contribute. The referendum date was announced a week ago.

The state election commission says it needs $85 million for the vote ahead of national elections later in the year to end the nation's shaky coalition between President Robert Mugabe and the former opposition formed after the violent and disputed elections in 2008.

All coalition leaders have called for a 'Yes' vote on the new constitution.

Finance Minister Tendai Biti said the United Nations cited bureaucratic procedures preventing it from providing referendum money, adding "we submitted our budgets a bit late," the Sunday Mail reported.

"I think they are going to fund the actual election but this time (for the referendum) we are going it alone," the paper quoted Biti saying. Biti is the third ranking official in Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's party.

Presidential and parliamentary elections are expected to be held around July.

Rights and democracy groups have called for a postponement of the referendum to give voters more time to study the 160-page draft constitution first published last Monday. They insist a hasty vote will not produce a credible outcome.

Vice President Joice Mujuru said Saturday no Western observers will be allowed into the country to monitor either of the upcoming polls.

Only African and regional observers will be permitted as election monitors, she said while addressing a state funeral in Harare, in the absence of Mugabe, who was on an official trip to West Africa.

Western nations hostile to Mugabe sought to infiltrate the country as monitors to influence the outcome of voting in their favor, Mujuru said.

"Let us be wary of foreign interference in our internal politics," she said.

Mugabe expelled a European Union observer mission during elections in 2002 that the European monitors alleged were marred by violence and vote rigging.

Western donors give the bulk of pledges to United Nations appeals for funds to help member states.

The official election commission says that in a departure from usual election practice the voters' lists will not be used in the March 16 referendum. Voters aged 18 and above can cast their ballots in any of 9,000 polling states across the country using only valid national identity cards.

That procedure would mean a larger voter turnout within the time constraints up to referendum, it says.

In previous parliament and presidential elections, glaring errors in the voters' lists, including registered voters who have long since died or have moved to other districts, were blamed for vote rigging and fraud.

Madonna crowned top music earner in 2012 due to world tour

(Reuters) - Madonna was named the biggest money maker in music in 2012 on Friday, with a world tour helping her take home up to $34.6 million and highlighting the earning power of live performances as the industry increasingly goes digital.

The 54-year-old Material Girl topped Billboard Magazine's annual list of 40 top money makers for the second time after earning an estimated $32 million - 93.5 percent of her revenue - from her 88-date "MDNA" tour, 2012's biggest tour.

Madonna, who also led the list in 2008 due to tour income, was the only woman in the top 10 with last year's winner, Taylor Swift, who fell to 15th place as she did not tour in 2012.

In second place in the music magazine's list was Bruce Springsteen whose $33.4 million revenue was also primarily driven by touring, playing to sold-out stadiums and arenas.

Springsteen, who also released a No. 1 album, "Wrecking Ball," last year, earned 92 percent of his revenue from live shows where strong merchandise sales also boosted takings.

Roger Waters, founder of Pink Floyd, came a distant third with earnings of $21 million largely from "The Wall Live" tour and Van Halen was fourth with $20 million after touring in support of their album "A Different Kind of Truth".

"When it comes to making the biggest score, the most money always comes from high-paying live performances," Billboard's editorial analyst Glenn Peoples wrote in explaining the list.

"Ironically, the most popular touring artists are usually well past their peaks on the album sales charts."

Country music veteran Kenny Chesney, the Dave Matthews Band, country's Tim McGraw and Jason Aldean, and British band Coldplay came next on the list.

Canadian teen sensation Justin Bieber was 10th, earning almost $16 million of which about $10 million came from his sold-out "Believe" arena tour.

"The entire top 10 averaged 84.2 percent of their income from concerts, and the number would have been higher, if not for Justin Bieber's mere 60.1 percent share at No. 10 dragging down the average," said Billboard.

However touring was not vital for every act on the list such as Swift and Britain's Adele.

Swift earned $12.7 million after selling the most digital tracks in 2012. She sold more than 3 million digital albums and 15.6 million digital tracks driven by her hit "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together".

Adele took the year out after having a baby but still earned nearly $14 million, putting her 11th in the rankings, due to continuing strong physical and digital sales for her album "21".

Maroon 5, ranked 33rd in the list, took the highest share of streaming revenue which made 3.5 percent of its $7.2 million.

Billboard said streaming music online to paying customers has not caught on with older generations and was small in percentage terms but growing.

"Yet even in the coming years, as streaming services become a more important revenue source, possibly replacing digital downloads and CD sales, one thing is unlikely to change: concerts will have the greatest influence of top earners' overall earnings," said Peoples.

The list was compiled by Billboard editors using data for Boxscore archives of U.S. concert gross figures, Nielsen SoundScan data for sales, YouTube, and Nielsen BDS data.

The full list can be seen at http://billboard.com/moneymakers

RIAA claims Google's anti-piracy downranking doesn't work

RIAA claims Google's antipiracy downranking doesn't work

Google offered an olive branch to content producers when it promised to downrank pirate sites in its search results last summer. Really, the RIAA was looking for the whole tree; it just published a report claiming that Google's technique hasn't had any tangible impact. The agency argues that the millions of takedown requests didn't lead to "significant" drops in rank for habitual violators. It further contends that many legitimate music sites only showed up in the top ten for about half of the searches, and were often kicked down the ladder by their bootleg counterparts. We're reaching out to Google to get its side of the story, but the RIAA isn't quite as patient: it's demanding that Google "immediately" change the results and volunteers its help. While that's a step forward from the music group's previous accusatory stance, it doesn't quite represent a two-way conversation on anti-piracy measures.

St Andrews' economic contribution to Scottish economy reaches ...

Photoanna

Photo: Hannah Raval

A recent report found that the Uni?versity of St Andrews now contributes more than ?484million a year to the Scot?tish economy ? an increase of ?179 million since 2008-09.

The independent report, carried out by BiGGAR economics, found that de?spite being one of the smallest universi?ties in Scotland, turnover has increased by an impressive 16% over three years.

The ?Economic Impact of the Univer?sity of St Andrews 2011-12? report found that for every ?1 of public teaching and research grant invested in St Andrews, the University now returns ?12.10 to the Scottish economy.

Between 2008-09 and 2011-12 ?fund?ing body grants? reduced by almost 3% in cash terms and more than 10% in real terms to ?40.1 million. Despite this, the University has seen levels of growth and their reliance on this funding has de?creased as it now accounts for less than a quarter of the University?s turnover. Uni?versity leaders say that this demonstrates that Scotland?s universities are generators of significant wealth in local and national economies, rather than simply consum?ers of public funds.

As international students now make up around one third of the student body, they have provided an important source of income for the University. There has been an increase of almost ?13 million in three years from international students. This is an increase of 57%.

The report also investigated the im?pacts of core university spending, staff and student spending, business and spin-out activity, capital spend, tourism and community projects in financial year 2011-12.

With 7,777 full time students at the university, student spending has many benefits for the local economy. St An?drews students contributed ?53.9 mil?lion and supported 1,791 full-time jobs in Scotland through direct spending, part-time work and international stu?dents coming to Scotland and staying on to work. In St Andrews itself, the student impact was ?36.4million a year, support?ing 1,401 jobs.

Graduates of the University also con?tribute millions of pounds to the Scottish economy every year. The study looked at the ?graduate premium? ? the longer term effects of the University?s graduates on productivity in the economy. The lifetime graduate premium of a single year?s co?hort of graduates of the University was ?15 million in the St Andrews economy and ?95.9 million in the Scottish econo?my.

The University is still one of the big?gest employers in the local area. The Uni?versity directly employs 2,355 members of staff and supports 4,586 jobs in the town. Education provides 37% of employment in the area. The University also contrib?utes to tourism, a sector which provides 29% of employment in St Andrews.

The number of jobs that the Univer?sity now supports across Scotland has fallen from 9,197 in 2008-09 to 8,913 last year, which the University says is due to general changes in the economy and particularly a requirement to spend more on rising external utilities charges, even although its energy consumption has flat-lined for the last two years.

BiGGAR economics have also recent?ly completed similar studies for Glasgow Caledonian University and Herriot Watt University. St Andrews compares very favourably with these reports. Glasgow Caledonian University, had 16, 131 stu?dents in the year 2011-12. For every ?1 of funding given to GCU from the Scottish Funding Council, they returned ?7.20 to the Scottish economy.

Derek Watson, Chief Operating Of?fice for the St Andrews, explained that universities are vital to the Scottish econ?omy during the recession. He said: ?Our primary mission is and always will be the pursuit of excellence in education and research, but this analysis demonstrates that Scotland?s universities not only gen?erate knowledge, but crucial wealth and employment.

?If the UK economy is to require new stimuli to move out of recession, there is a strong argument that universities are one of the most reliable options for increased public investment, given their proven multiplier effect, the freedom to operate in international markets and the level of wealth and sustainable employ?ment they are capable of generating for the country.?

Watson also explained how it is im?portant for the University to retain its support from the Scottish Funding Coun?cil to ensure the University can continue to make an important contribution to the local economy.

?For every pound of Scottish Fund?ing Council grant we receive, we gener?ate and return ?12 to the economy. Or, to turn it on its head, for every pound that St Andrews loses, Scotland will lose ?12.

?In the three years since the last eco?nomic impact assessment, our annual gross contribution to the Scottish econ?omy has grown by over ?170 million a year to ?484million, partly due to an increasing spend by the University with local suppliers, our impact on tourism, spending by our staff, the premium of supplying well educated graduates to the economy and an improved ability to measure impact.?

The Scottish Funding Council told The Saint: ?Funding for universities has increased overall this year (in 2012-13) and will do so for the next two years. This is important because St Andrews plays a signifi?cant role in the economy of Fife, alongside its major con?tributions to the long term prosperity of Scotland and to international economic devel?opment.?

RUK applications to St Andrews on the rise

Behind the story

Applications to St Andrews from UK students living outside Scotland is on the rise. According to UCAS, the University?s admis?sions team is currently considering 14,355 applications, which has increased by 6% since last year. Despite the growth of tuition fees for English and Welsh students, the team has noticed an 11% increase in applications coming from the rest of the UK (Nina Chitaia writes).

In 2012 the number of English applicants to St Andrews was down by 3%, as the cost of attendance became ?9,000. Most universi?ties in England last for three years, while St Andrews offers a four-year course. Rather than spending an extra year, as well as extra money on their studies, students coming from England and Wales chose to stay at home.

However, St Andrews has seen a turnaround and the University has this year been flooded with non-Scottish appli?cants.

The University advised caution when analysing the figures however. A spokes?man told The Saint: ?It would be unwise to read too much into a single year?s figures, although on the whole the increase in applica?tions is to be welcomed and may indicate grow?ing public confidence in the value of high quality higher educa?tion, notwithstanding tuition fees and the considerable pressures of recession on family incomes.

?It is important to note that applications to St Andrews have increased from prospec?tive students across all sections of society.

?Applications from Scottish students from the most deprived backgrounds have increased markedly, an endorsement of the continuing hard work and varied outreach ac?tivities of our Widening Participation team in Admissions,? he said.

Mercury inches above normal in north India

Mercury inches above normal in north India New Delhi: The chill had diminished in intensity in north India on Tuesday with most areas reporting above normal temperatures though hilly areas were still grappling with cold weather conditions.

It was a foggy morning in Delhi where the minimum inched up to remain within normal at 11.2 degrees Celsius.

The maximum in the national capital, however, settled three notches below normal at 22 degrees.

Punjab and Haryana, too, witnessed minimum temperatures hovering around normal across the region.

Mercury inches above normal in north India

Amritsar in Punjab was the coldest place in the region at 7.4 degrees with the MeT office saying the temperature was normal for this time of the season.

The mercury was reported above normal in Patiala and Ludhiana which recorded lows of 11 degrees and 11.2 degrees respectively.

The weather forecast for the two neighbouring states is for another spell of moderate rainfall on February 22 and 23 accompanied by strong winds.

Mercury inches above normal in north India

Conditions had improved in Kashmir with most parts of the Valley reporting a marginal rise in minimum temperatures.

On the other hand, high altitude areas in Himachal Pradesh reeled under cold wave conditions even as middle and lower hills reported a slight rise in mercury.

It was a cloudy and windy day in the state and a pale sun failed to bring any warmth with day temperatures registering a drop at a few places.

Una, which had yesterday reported a maximum of 22.2 degrees, today recorded a high of 17.8 degrees.

Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district saw the mercury setlling at -11.6 degrees while Manali recorded a low of -1.8 degrees.

The forecast is for dry weather in the middle and lower hills in the coming two days to be followed by rain and snow across the state from February 22.

It may be educational, but what is that TV show really teaching your preschooler?

Feb. 19, 2013 ? Most parents carefully select what television programs and movies their children can watch. But a study in the latest Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology found that even educational shows could come with an added lesson that influences a child's behavior. Douglas Gentile, a professor of psychology at Iowa State University, was part of the research team.

"Children who spent more time watching educational programs increased their relational aggression toward other children over initial levels," Gentile said. "This study shows that children can learn more than one lesson out of a given program. They can learn the educational lesson that was intended, but they're also learning other things along the way."

This unintended impact has to do with the portrayal of conflict in media and how preschool-age children comprehend that conflict. Gentile said TV and movie producers often incorporate an element of bad behavior in order to teach children a lesson at the end of the program. This type of conflict is also found in children's literature.

However, since children between the ages of 2 and 5 do not typically understand the plot of shows, Gentile said they do not know how the beginning of a story relates to the end.

"Even though educational shows like Arthur have pro-education and pro-social goals, conflict between characters is often depicted with characters being unkind to each other or using relational aggressive tactics with each other," Gentile said. "Preschool children really don't get the moral of the story because that requires that they understand how all the parts of the show fit together. You need pretty complicated cognitive skills and memory skills to be able to do that, which are still developing in young children."

For the study, researchers observed how the children interacted with others in the classroom and on the playground at day care centers. They also relied on behavior reports from teachers and parents. They found that children exposed to educational programs were more aggressive in their interactions.

Researchers observed each child for approximately 2.5 hours throughout the study. They note that the aggression they witnessed was generally not physical. Jamie Ostrov, a professor of psychology at the University of Buffalo in New York and another member of the research team, said the behaviors often mirrored those incorporated in children's programming.

"The most common relationally aggressive behaviors were children saying, 'I won't be your friend anymore unless you do what I say,' or 'You can't come to my birthday party' as well as socially excluding a peer from play," Ostrov said. "From our viewing, this type of relational aggression is much more common in young children's programming than physically aggressive behavior."

Lessons for parents

Researchers caution parents against completely pulling the plug on TV and movies for their children. Gentile said there is a benefit to educational programming, but it could also teach undesirable behaviors. Parents may already limit the content and the amount of media their children consume, but he said parents can be more involved when their children are in front of the TV.

"Parents can watch with their kids and help them to understand the plot. Parents can comment along the way and then explain the message at the end. They explain how the insulting behavior or the ignoring behavior was not appropriate. This will help children interpret and get the message and help them learn to watch it for those messages," Gentile said.

Researchers asked parents about the specific media their children were exposed to during the study. Ostrov said most programs were educational or informational in nature with an emphasis on social and emotional issues. Programs such as "Arthur," as well as "Curious George" and "Reading Rainbow," were among those most often mentioned by parents. Gentile said to more fully understand the issues presented in these programs there needs to be more analysis of the content.

CyanogenMod 10.1 stock camera app now sports HDR shooting

CyanogenMod 10.1 stock camera app now sports HDR shooting

CyanogenMod 10.1-toting photography fans are in for a treat: the latest version of the modified Android OS now packs an HDR mode, which was in development for three months, within its stock camera app. When a user snaps a photo with the function, a total of three pictures (one at minimal, neutral and maximum exposures) are taken and combined into a single HDR image with the help of an algorithm. Differences in shutter speed, sensors and optics means quality will vary across smartphones, but the CyanogenMod team says that mid- to high-end devices outfitted with decent imaging hardware -- especially those with zero shutter lag -- should perform admirably. Of course, the group also recommends using a stand or tripod to thwart movement and vibration from fouling up photos. Android Central points out that a few handset builds haven't received the update, so a handful of CyanogenMod-wielding photogs will still have to get their HDR fix elsewhere.

Billionaire Metro co-founder Beisheim commits suicide

DUESSELDORF, Germany (Reuters) - German billionaire Otto Beisheim, one of the founders of retail group Metro , committed suicide after being diagnosed with an incurable illness.

Beisheim, 89, had lost hope after his diagnosis and was found dead at his home near the Tegernsee lake in Bavaria on Monday morning, his company said.

He had helped introduce to Germany in the 1960s the concept of "cash and carry", warehouse-type shops where trade customers such as hotels and restaurants go to buy products in bulk.

The Metro group, now the world's fourth-largest retailer, described him as a "pioneer".

"With his self-service cash-and-carry concept, he revolutionized the sector in the mid 1960s," Metro Chief Executive Olaf Koch said in a statement.

The group's operations include the Kaufhof department stores familiar to German cities, supermarkets, consumer electronics stores and cash and carries in Moldova and Japan. It had turnover of 66.7 billion euros ($89 billion) in 2012, almost half of which came from the cash and carry division.

Last year was a tough one for the group, which issued a profit warning, lost its place in the Dax index of leading German shares and received downgrades to its credit ratings.

Declining spending by shoppers in Europe worried about the euro zone debt crisis and the rise of internet retailers have also contributed to its shares losing 15 percent of their value over the past year.

A spokeswoman for the Beisheim Group said there were no plans to sell the billionaire's near-10 percent stake in Metro. He was the third-largest shareholder behind the Haniel and Schmidt-Ruthenbeck families, which together own 45.78 percent.

Beisheim's net worth was estimated at $3.3 billion by Forbes in March 2012, making him Germany's 22nd richest person.

He supported the Otto Beisheim School of Management, which took his name after a major donation, and was behind the redevelopment of the Beisheim Center on Berlin's Potsdamer Platz, an office and shopping complex that houses the five-star Ritz Carlton and Marriott hotels.

A widower with no children, Beisheim's assets will be divided between two foundations to foster cultural and business projects.

However, his image has been clouded by his role in the Second World War. German media reports have said that he was a member of Hitler's Waffen-SS. The spokeswoman for the Beisheim Group said only that he was a low-ranking member and switched to a different division in 1942. ($1 = 0.7490 euros)
