Why did Democrats choose Antonio Villaraigosa to lead national convention?

Antonio Villaraigosa has built an impressive r?sum? in the California Assembly and as mayor of Los Angeles. As chair of the Democratic National Convention, he could help woo Latinos.?

The appointment of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to be chairman of this summer?s Democratic National Convention points to a political career on a potentially upward arc, with some analysts suggesting that a cabinet position could loom in President Obama's second term.

For Mr. Obama and the Democratic Party, the benefits could be more immediate. As essentially the emcee of the three-day September convention in Charlotte, N.C., Mayor Villaraigosa will provide instant outreach to Hispanics, who could be crucial in the general election. Moreover, his contacts in the business community are expected to be a boon to Democratic money-raising efforts.

?His appointment is a coup for the Democratic Party,? says Barbara O?Connor, director emeritus of the Institute for Study of Politics and Media at California State University, Sacramento.???He will attract Hispanic voters but also a lot of money by virtue of his relationship to business both in?Los Angeles?and internationally.?

Villaraigosa became the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since 1872, and has amassed a r?sum? that includes speaker of the California Assembly ? the first from?L.A.?in 25 years ? and head of the US Conference of Mayors.

He was born in?East Los Angeles?to a Mexican-immigrant father and California-born mother of Mexican descent. Raised by a single mom from age 5, Villaraigosa participated in the first grape boycott led by C?sar Ch?vez, graduated from night school, went to law school, and became a prominent labor organizer.

?One of Obama?s biggest challenges is that he needs a way to motivate his base, and one of his biggest challenges there is with Latino voters,? says Dan Schnur,?director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at the University of Southern California. ?There?s no danger of them switching their loyalties and going with the GOP in November, but Obama needs to get them to the polls."

"Even though this appointment is largely symbolic, that certainly helps in?California?and all the swing states that Obama needs such as?Nevada,?Florida, New Mexico, and?Florida,? he adds.

South Dakota Ranked Least Humane State | The Ranch Wife ...

Last week the Rapid City Journal (RCJ) ran a story and interviewed a good friend of ours.? It?s not everyday a South Dakota Rancher gets an?in color picture on the front page of the Journal.

East Coast Group Ranks South Dakota Least Humane State was the name of the article.? The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) gave South Dakota a poor status due to lack of producers following HSUS?s recommended farming regulations.? According to HSUS?s 66 item list of humanitarian animal policies South Dakota meets eight of the standards.? In addition, all of our neighboring states have relatively low ranks too.

The article states HSUS?s ?checklist includes a dozen recommended animal-fighting restrictions, a half dozen animal-cruelty penalties, 18 hunting, trapping and sale restrictions and seven farm animal restrictions. The list also includes rules for horse protection, dog breeding, exotic pet ownership and animal research.?

The South Dakota State Veterinarian reported that his office receives close to 100 livestock maltreatment complaints per year. Of those 100 cases about 10 turn out to be actual cases of inhumane animal abuse.? There is an estimate 17,000 livestock producing farms and ranches in our state.? The State Veterinarian is confident in the system South Dakota uses to handle?maltreatment of livestock.

According to the State Veterinarian local Humane Societies handle?cases of inhumane and?abuse of small animals.? Primarily dogs and cats. ???

I read the RCJ article and was okay with it.? I think it brings a real issue to the table hinting at HSUS?s ?one size fits all? political campaign.? I was happy with the individuals the Journal visited with, real life people involved with agriculture on a daily basis.?

Our friend sent me a message asking if I had read the comments section of the article.? Well no, so I went back and did so.

Several comments were from livestock or dairy producers encouraging individuals outside?the agriculture community to make sure to do their homework. ?Sharing that HSUS is NOT a local Humane Society.? In fact, they are a Washington D.C. based lobbying group that spends ? of 1% of their budget supporting animal shelters.?

One commenting individual from Lead, SD is a HSUS?member.? After reading the comments, I have the feeling ?luv4animals? is misinformed about the organization he/she belongs to.? They stated the huge need for laws to protect companion animals and that HSUS?has no agenda concerning the abolishment of animal agriculture.? Actually ?luv4animals? was not the only commenter that said the legislation HSUS proposes has nothing to do with animal agriculture.

Several people expressed worry about dogs and cats, stating there is research to support that many serial killers started their careers by torturing and abusing small animals. ?

I wanted to share this article with you for?a couple?of reasons:

1.? For the agriculture community this article is proof that telling our story and sharing the truth about our livelihood is being heard.? We have come a long way ?agvocating.?? After reading some of the comments?related?to?this article, we have a ways to go to reveal the truth behind anti-animal agriculture groups.

2.? For the non-agriculture community I hope this article gives you some food for thought.? I hope?you do some honest research and know the truth behind the agendas of organizations like HSUS.

Obama friendly but firm with China heir apparent

WASHINGTON | Wed Feb 15, 2012 12:10pm IST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama told Chinese leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping on Tuesday that Beijing must play by the same trade rules as other major world powers and vowed to keep pressing China to clean up its human rights record.

In White House talks, Obama sought to reassure Xi that Washington welcomed China's "peaceful rise". But he signalled that frictions would remain, with growing economic and military rivalry between the two countries, and chided China over its opposition to U.N. action on Syria.

The meeting with Obama was the centerpiece of a heavily scripted visit that could help the Chinese vice president boost his international standing and show he is capable of steering his country's relationship with Washington for the next decade.

Obama's firm message on trade, currency, human rights and global issues such as Syria was notable, given that the meetings were previewed as essentially sizing-up sessions.

Obama has assumed a tougher tone with China in recent months, and is under election-year pressure from Republican presidential candidates, who say his approach has been too conciliatory.

"With expanding power and prosperity also comes increased responsibilities," Obama said as he sat side by side with Xi in the Oval Office.

"We want to work with China to make sure that everybody is working by the same rules of the road when it comes to the world economic system, and that includes ensuring that there is a balanced trade flow," he said.

But Xi, who has to play to a powerful Communist Party apparatus and nationalist sentiment at home, later told American business leaders that Beijing was acting on U.S. concerns but asked for similar consideration from the Obama administration.

Obama pressed the Chinese leadership to let the value of the yuan rise and to do more to reduce the record $295.5 billion U.S. trade deficit with China -- two issues fuelling concerns that Chinese practices are putting U.S. firms at a disadvantage.

But U.S. leverage over Beijing is limited, not least because China is America's largest foreign creditor, and it remained unclear how much of Obama's rhetoric was political posturing at a time when anti-China sentiment was high in the United States.

China's Vice Commerce Minister, Gao Hucheng, estimated that travelling Chinese trade and investment delegations would buy $27.1 billion of U.S. goods, including silicon chips, electronic materials, equipment and machinery, as well as farm produce.

SMILING, NODDING LEADERS

Xi, 58, in line to assume the presidency in March 2013, said he looked forward to building a "cooperative partnership based on mutual respect" but did not address Obama's criticism in their joint appearance before reporters. Each leader smiled and nodded as the other spoke and they shook hands.

At a State Department lunch, Xi said the two sides must resolve economic disputes through dialogue, "not protectionism".

In a Chamber of Commerce speech, Xi stood his ground against U.S. complaints on trade imbalances and intellectual property, saying Beijing "has taken steps to address them".

He countered U.S. trade concerns, by calling on the United States to address Chinese concerns on "lifting restrictions on high-tech exports to China and providing a level playing field for Chinese firms investing in America".

Although Obama's aides see the visit yielding no breakthroughs, the United States and China agreed to talks on setting guidelines for export-credit financing, and China agreed to open up its auto insurance market to foreign competition.

Xi's visit comes when ties between Beijing and Washington - the world's two biggest economies - have been buffeted by strains over economic disputes, human rights and each country's military intentions.

"On critical issues like human rights we will continue to emphasize what we believe is the importance of recognizing the aspirations and rights of all people," Obama said.

Chinese leaders usually bristle at such public criticism as meddling in their affairs, and U.S. officials say Obama reserves stronger language for behind closed doors.

Xi cautioned U.S. leaders to avoid "further disturbance and damage" to relations in how they respond to sensitive issues like Taiwan and Tibet, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Outside the White House, about 200 protesters decried China's controls in the restive regions of Tibet and Xinjiang, its ban on the Falun Gong spiritual sect, and its rules banning most urban families from having more than one child.

DIFFERENCES ON SYRIA

Obama chided Xi over China's decision to join Russia in a veto of a U.N. Security Council resolution against Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

But Obama appears to have dealt more cautiously with the issue of Iran, thanking Beijing for helping to enforce sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear program. Washington hopes to coax China to wean itself off of Iranian oil.

Speaking to reporters in Washington late on Tuesday, China's Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai warned that missteps by the U.N. Security Council could lead to more bloodshed in Syria. He also reiterated that U.S. sanctions on Iran should not affect Beijing's "legitimate economic interests and energy needs".

Xi is the highest-ranking Chinese official to visit since Obama launched a new U.S. "pivot" toward Asia in November to counterbalance China's increasing assertiveness in the region.

At the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta alluded to strained military-to-military ties as Washington reasserts itself in the Asia-Pacific region in the face of China's buildup. Both men pledged to work to restore trust.

It was still early morning in Beijing when Xi held talks in Washington, so it was unclear how fully the U.S. criticism about trade, human rights and Syria would be aired there.

U.S. officials hope the talks will help them gauge the priorities Xi will pursue.

Xi is a Communist Party "princeling," the son of a revolutionary leader, but also fond of Hollywood war dramas. he is less stiff in public than the man he will succeed as president, Hu Jintao, but his views remain largely opaque to policymakers in Washington.

Xi's tour will take him from Washington to a farm in Iowa to Los Angeles as he looks to ease Americans' worries about China.

Question by Cole H: AP Physics Question (not homework help)?
So today we had to register for the AP classes that we want.
I (not bragging) have an extreme talent when it comes to anything that has to do with mathematics.
I am currently a sophomore enrolled in Trig/ Pre-Calc, and passed 1st semester with a 99 (no EC is offered ever) and currently hold a 100%.
I was taken to the AP Physics teacher by me chemistry honors teacher today to get the signature. She told him that it would be a crime to have me take a non-AP Physics class, and that I need to be enrolled in AP physics.
The AP physics teacher said that as long as I understand Right Triangle Trig and sine and cosine there shouldn?t be a problem.
However the AP coordinator (who honestly, thinks too highly of himself and is a total jerk) told me that there was no way I would be allowed to take AP physics without taking regular Physics first.
Is it seriously that hard to take AP physics? Is it necessary to take regular physics first? Because I am not the only student who is having this problem and over 30 kids are interested in taking the course, but the AP Coordinator says no.
Before we take action with the principal, I would like to know.. is it unwise to take AP physics without taking a basic physics first? Why?

Best answer:

Answer by Michael
I took AP Physics B my Junior year of high school with no prior experience in the subject, and I was fine (my previous math grades weren?t even as stellar as yours are). I rarely say this, but in this case I would ignore the AP coordinator on this one and just go for it! You?ll definitely regret it if you don?t.

Enjoy AP Physics next year!

6 Steps For Better Communication About Valentine's Day | World of ...

This guest article from YourTango was written by Maryanne Comaroto.?

Rob, 35, from California asks:

Last year my wife flipped out when I bought her lingerie for Valentine?s Day. The truth is, I still don?t know why. She just got angry and said, ?Isn?t it obvious?? and that was it. Any advice on what I get her this year that won?t set her off (and that we both can enjoy), which is what I thought the point of Valentine?s Day was?

Maryanne?s answer:

Rob, that?s a great question. Some guys might have just blown it off and thought, ?Hmmm, maybe this year I?ll get her some lingerie in a different color.? Sounds like you?re guessing that is not the answer, unless you like being told off and sexually frustrated.

In terms of what you can get, you need to get clear on what both your expectations are about Valentine?s Day? and the more explicit the better! Because likely, her reaction last year is not only a symptom of what?s really going on, but has now had a chance to fester and become a resentment for you both. That is like poison in a relationship. So, getting clarity is what should be first on your list!

You can start by saying a simple ?I love you (fill in her pet name; babe, honey, sweetie) and I know last year?s Valentine?s was a little rough, so I was wondering what we could do to make this one special.? Things could go either way: on one hand, your inquiry might elicit a simple and straightforward answer like ?Awww, thanks for asking honey, I don?t know?what were you thinking?? Maybe she too realizes how Valentine?s Day conjures old memories or expectations, and all she wanted was to be asked. Or you might have created an opportunity to listen to what really upset her last year, a great segue to discussing what Valentine?s Day means, and have a mature and loving talk about how you both would like this one to play out.

If it?s the latter and you?d like this to stay on course, to be effective, constructive, mature and responsible (as opposed to her unloading, reacting or blaming, or whatever your concern), here are some guidelines that will help set you up to succeed in engaging in responsible, effective communication:

1. State your objective clearly: I want to talk about how we can have a great Valentine?s Day together this year.

2. Timing: Make sure you don?t approach her while she?s on her way out the door, brushing her teeth or obviously frantic about anything. Most women, when you say ?I want to talk,? will likely want to talk now. If not, ask her when a good time is.

3. Agree on some ground rules, such as the following: We each get 3-5 minutes to talk without interruption, without using I-messages and without blame. If neither one of you knows what an I-message is, go online and find out, it could save your relationship. An example is, ?I felt disappointed when you gave me lingerie when I really wanted to go out to a romantic dinner.? or, ?I feel resentful that you don?t spend more time being romantic like we used to be.? Then you say: ?I feel angry about how contrived this holiday is sometimes and then I feel pressure on me to do it perfect and if I don?t do it right I?ll get cut off and I don?t like guessing at what you want or trying to read your mind.?

4. Repeat what you heard: This is critical; take turns and repeat back what you heard each other say. Doing this carefully and sincerely allows you to unlock your compassionate heart and start moving the energy from feeling separate towards being more connected.

5. Be honest about how you would like it to be: Spend 3-5 minutes telling each other what you want this Valentine?s Day or Valentine?s in general to be like ideally. ?I would like to go out to a nice dinner, surprise me on where, and then let?s maybe come home and fool around, I love the buildup?? And you might say: ?I would really like to stay in, order takeout and then have you give me a sexy massage and skip your friend?s party.?

6. Negotiate on each other?s behalf: This is the fun part; now you get to switch roles and be each other?s advocate, keeping in mind the ultimate goal, which is to create more intimacy and connection! That might look like, she says on his behalf: ?How about I make you dinner, give you a massage, we stop by the party if you still want to for an hour?? And then he says on her behalf: ?How about I take you out for champagne and appetizers, we stop by your friend?s for a half hour and then come home and give each other massages??

Typically, after you have taken care to connect and hear each other, you realize that you both want the same thing: to be together, to understand what each other wants and to please one another. You just might let it all go, pop a bottle of bubbly, Skype your friends at the party while she?s wearing your lingerie and then take a taxi to an all-night diner after you?ve made love!

The thing is, relationships aren?t tidy and our wants and needs change from moment to moment, year-in and year-out. So while you may not be willing to give or get what you want this time, keep in mind that Valentine?s Day or not, true love is kind, patient and always respectful. We don?t need a holiday to remember that! And responsible communication is the way we can show it 365 days a year!

How To Efficiently Plan Your Home Improvement Project ? Tips ...

We know you are here to get some definitive info about which is great because that is what you will find. Well, welcome to the club because you are absolutely not alone with that feeling of needing to know more.

Depending on your needs, you can search for and locate knowledgeable people who can help you directly. One thing about our approach is that we prefer to learn what we need to know so there is not any kind of need for anyone else.

It is hard to beat solid information, and that is what this article contains.

We all proceed at a pace that is comfortable for us, and you will have the best results that way, anyway.

Home improvement projects are fun to do, but if you do not do your research prior to starting it may not go the way you want it to. Some people actually believe that they can start a home renovation or repair project and simply get it done without proper planning ? this is not how it works! By reading this article, you will have a better idea of how to plan your home improvement project in the most efficient manner possible.

Before you start your home renovations, talk to everyone you know who has any experience with this. Not just your immediate family, but acquaintances, coworkers, and generally anyone you can ask. All you have to do is have a conversation with someone with experience in this area. Successes, and mistakes, are all good life lessons to know. Sometimes you can get your best information from a contractor, especially in regard to hiring someone to help you. Another great way to find information about home improvement is to check out forums and websites that are on the Internet. It is easy to learn new things by talking to others every now and then. No information by itself will move you to action, and that is true for yaz lawsuit, as well. What you do with this information is totally up to you, but we hope that it does not just gather dust in your head.

It seems so many people have a sincere desire to do something, but they fall in the trap of just sitting there and wishing. As you well know, even though overcoming inaction can be tough at first, once you just get started will make all the difference.

We all know it is easy to think about things, but the other part of the equation is the movement part ? move toward your goals. After saying all of that, it is time to move forward.

There are many components of your home. When doing the remodel, all of these components should fit well together. The way that you remodel your house will have a direct impact on the overall appearance and ambience of the home itself. Sticking to your budget is very important! You also need to distribute your money so each room in your home is remodeled in some small but efficient way. Sometimes doing something to one part of the house creates an imbalance, and will only call more attention to other factors that need work. Repairs on the inside, and outside of the home, should always be done in a way that creates balance and harmony when the job is done.

One area where many homeowners make mistakes is in putting too much money into renovations they mistakenly think will increase their home?s resale value. Even if you home is not for sale at the moment; when you do alterations keep the resale value in mind. People all have different tastes; so it would be impossible to figure out what may appeal to the next owner of your home. One example of an addition that may not be pleasing to a possible buyer is a swimming pool; due to the maintenance aspect. Although, if you are not planning on selling your home anytime soon; do what will make your life more comfortable. By carefully planning your home improvement efforts, you can save time and money and ensure the best results. You should really consider hiring an expert if you are not sure about any aspect of your home improvement endeavor. Don?t guess! Do only what needs to be done. Completing your home improvement project comes down to doing what needs to be done and planning ahead of time before the renovations begin.

Of course yaz class action lawsuit is important to you otherwise you would not have been searching for it. The curious thing to never forget is that what lies beyond the horizon on this topic is pretty expansive. None of us can ever see everything coming, but at least you can minimize the possibilities. Perhaps upon further reflection you will begin to visualize what needs to be done in terms of further reading. But as you well know, the internet is so huge that you can do that with no problems. Be sure you only take solid information from trusted sources on the net because we all know how it is. There is too much unreliable information floating around; so keep your wits about you and stay alert.

(AP) ? Two suicide car bombers struck security compounds in Aleppo on Friday, killing 28 people, Syrian officials said, bringing significant violence for the first time to an industrial center that has largely stood by President Bashar Assad during the 11-month uprising against his rule.

Anti-Assad activists denied any involvement and accused the regime of setting off the blasts to smear the opposition as government forces pummel rebels in one of their main strongholds, Homs. State media touted the bombings as proof the regime faces a campaign by terrorists, not a popular uprising.

The military stepped up its siege of Homs, where hundreds have reportedly been killed over the past week. Soldiers who have been bombarding the central city made their first ground move, storming into one of the most restive neighborhoods.

Troops and security forces opened fire on anti-regime protesters who streamed out of mosques after Friday prayers nationwide. At least 27 civilians were killed, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The morning blasts in Aleppo, Syria's most populous city, ripped apart the facades of the local headquarters of the Military Intelligence Directorate and a barracks of the Security Preservation forces.

At the Directorate, windows were shattered and a large crater was torn into the pavement outside the entrance. A weeping correspondent on state-run TV showed graphic footage of at least five corpses, collected in sacks and under blankets by the side of the road.

Security officials said suicide bombers in explosives-packed vehicles tried to smash through the entrances of both sites. At the barracks, Brig. Firas Abbas told an Associated Press reporter on a government-guided visit to the scene that the vehicle made it through one roadblock before detonating near the gates. A head lay on the ground and security officials said it belonged to a suicide attacker.

State television cited the Health Ministry as saying 28 people were killed in the two blasts and 235 wounded. The dead included 11 security personnel killed at the barracks, 13 military personnel killed at the military intelligence building and four civilians, security officials said.

State TV blamed "terrorists." But anti-government activists accused the regime of setting off the blasts to discredit the opposition and avert protests that had been planned in the city on Friday.

Capt. Ammar al-Wawi of the Free Syrian Army, a rebel group that wants to bring down the regime by force, denied involvement. He said fighters from his group had a short gunbattle with troops several hundred yards (meters) from the Directorate about an hour before the explosion but did not carry out the bombings.

"This explosion is the work of the regime to divert world attention from the crimes it is committing against the people of Homs," he said.

The blasts were the fourth such dramatic suicide attack since late December. All occurred on Friday mornings against various security headquarters and prompted the same exchange of accusations. The earlier attacks, in the capital Damascus, killed dozens of security forces and civilians, according to Syrian officials. Nobody has claimed responsibility for any of the attacks.

Friday's bombings were the first significant violence in Aleppo, a northern city of some 2 million people that is home to a prosperous business community and merchant class whose continued backing for Assad has been crucial in bolstering his regime.

The city has seen only occasional protests. Assad's opponents have had little success in galvanizing support there, in part because business leaders have long traded political freedoms for economic privileges. Also, the city has a large population of Kurds, who have mostly stayed on the sidelines of the uprising since Assad's regime began giving them long-denied citizenship as a gesture to win support.

Still, hours after the explosions, hundreds of protesters marched in several Aleppo neighborhoods after Friday prayers, part of nationwide demonstrations labeled "Friday of 'Russia is killing our children'" ? a denunciation of Russia's veto of a U.N. attempt to condemn Syria's crackdown.

Regime forces opened fire on the Aleppo protesters, killing at least seven, according to the Observatory. Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees put the Aleppo toll at 12 and said 22 others had been killed nationwide. The figures could not be independently confirmed due to restrictions the Syrian government has put on journalists.

Assad's crackdown has killed well over 5,400 people since the uprising began in March, according to U.N. estimates.

The regime's crackdown on dissent has left it almost completely isolated internationally ? except for key support from Russia and China, which delivered a double veto to block a U.N. resolution calling on Assad to leave power.

The king of Saudi Arabia, which has led Arab efforts against Assad, made his first public comments on Syria's crisis Friday. He denounced the Russian and Chinese vetoes, saying "the confidence of the world in the U.N. has undoubtedly been shaken."

"These countries don't rule the world, never. The world is ruled by wisdom, fairness, morals, and standing up to the aggressor," King Abdullah said in a televised speech. "We are living scary, scary days."

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov signaled Friday that Moscow would use its veto again to block any resolution aimed at ousting Assad.

"If our foreign partners don't understand that, we will have to use strong means again and again to call them back to reality," he was quoted as saying by the ITAR-Tass news agency.

Moscow's stance is motivated in part by its strategic and defense ties, including weapons sales, with Syria. Russia also rejects what it sees as a world order dominated by the U.S. Last month, Russia reportedly signed a $550 million deal to sell combat jets to Syria.

Across Syria on Friday, thousands held protests denouncing the Russian position, from the northwestern province of Idlib, to the suburbs of Damascus, the Mediterranean coastal city of Latakia and the eastern town of Deir al-Zour.

A week ago, security forces launched a major assault on Homs after unconfirmed reports that army defectors and other armed opponents of Assad were setting up their own checkpoints and taking control of the most restive neighborhoods.

Days of bombardment of the neighborhoods with artillery, heavy machine guns and mortars continued Friday, as troops on the ground backed by tanks for the first time pushed into one of the districts, Inshaat, activists said.

The Observatory said troops were going house to house detaining people. Inshaat is next to Baba Amr, a neighborhood that has been under rebel control for months.

"They are punishing the residents," said the Observatory's chief Rami Abdul-Rahman, who added that food supplies were dwindling in the area.

Mohammed Saleh, a Syria-based activist, said the regime appears to be trying to take over rebel-held areas in Homs and Idlib before Feb. 17, when Assad's ruling Baath party is scheduled to hold its first general conference since 2005.

The conference is expected to move on reforms that Assad has promised in a bid to calm the uprising. During the conference, Baath party leaders are expected to call for national dialogue and announce they will open the way for other political parties to play a bigger role in Syria's politics.

The opposition has rejected such promises as insincere and said it will not accept anything less than Assad's departure.

La Jolla Community Foundation welcomes first director | La Jolla ...

By Pat Sherman

Since arriving in San Diego from the Midwest during Super Bowl weekend of 1988, Charlene Pryor has forged an impressive r?sum? in the world of philanthropy and nonprofit giving, serving as senior vice-president of endowments and planned giving at The San Diego Foundation and as director of gift planning for the Zoological Society of San Diego.
Last month, Pryor returned to the San Diego Foundation as senior director of charitable giving, donor experience and engagement, where she will also work part-time to increase philanthropic giving for the nascent La Jolla Community Foundation.

Charlene Pryor

Pryor holds a bachelor?s degree in business administration from the University of Wisconsin, Stout.??It is a great fit, because I have always been kind of involved in the La Jolla community,? said Pryor, a former member of the La Jolla Rotary Club, and past president of the La Jolla Estate, Trust and Probate Board. ?I know a number of attorneys, CPAs and financial advisors who both live and work in La Jolla. This is an opportunity to step in and pursue and engage new members for the La Jolla Community Foundation, and really make a difference in that community.?

Phyllis Pfeiffer, La Jolla Community Foundation board chair, said Pryor brings ?vast experience in philanthropy? to the foundation.
?In the short time she has already been with us, Charlene has made a difference,? said Pfeiffer, who is also publisher of the La Jolla Light. ?In her joint role working with donors, she will be able to introduce them to significant projects in their own backyards.?

The oundation?s community beautification projects include a series of public art murals, restoration of the La Jolla Shores fire pits, and educational pedestals along the shoreline that will provide information about the coast?s environment, wildlife and history.

The Murals of La Jolla project includes pieces on Drury Lane, Eads Avenue, Fay Avenue and Prospect Street. A mural by artist Ann Hamilton has been commissioned this year for the 7900 block of Herschel Avenue.
In addition, the foundation plans to work on infrastructure projects, including a makeover of ?The Teardrop,? a long-neglected median at the intersection of Torrey Pines Road and La Jolla Parkway.
Pryor said the foundation intends to pursue partnerships and sponsorship opportunities with the more than 50 privately owned art galleries in the La Jolla area.

?With the right publicity on these murals ? we have an opportunity to bring in people to San Diego, and specifically to La Jolla, to enjoy the artwork and our coastal beauty,? said Pryor, who envisions a romantic return to La Jolla?s art colony days.

?We?ve strong people involved,? said Pryor, a native of Rochester, Minn. who got her start in San Diego with Sharp Healthcare. ?We?ve got Hugh Davies from the Museum of Contemporary Art, and we?ve got Erika Torri from the Athenaeum.?

Membership in the La Jolla Community Foundation, which was formed in 2009, ?starts at $1,000 per year. Three-quarters of the dues go toward community projects and grant making. The foundation will give out its first grants this fall. ??One of the (areas) we?re talking about might be financial literacy and education,? Pryor said.

The other 25 percent of membership fees are spent on endowment building. The organization currently has about 40 contributing members, a figure that Pryor said she hopes to double this year.

?I don?t think that?s unrealistic once we really set our minds to it and get the information out there,? she said. ?We just haven?t had an organized model yet.?

Though Pryor will continue working out of the San Diego Foundation office at Liberty Station, she said the La Jolla Community Foundation is seeking a Village storefront to ?create some visibility for the foundation and also to allow me to live and breathe La Jolla.?

New Legislation Seeks To Bring Down Costs Of Anti-Cancer ...

BALTIMORE (WJZ)? There are new drugs in the battle against cancer, if you can afford them. Some people who can?t are dying.

Alex DeMetrick reports, that?s prompted legislation to bring new chemotherapy costs down to save lives.

Chemotherapy drugs delivered by IV were once state-of-the-art, but a new generation of cancer-fighting drugs comes in pills.

?And I take two capsules every morning before breakfast, that?s it. No visits to the hospital. It works,?cancer survivor Coard Simpler said.

But it isn?t cheap. Because chemo delivered by IV takes medical personnel, it is covered by medical insurance, with co-pays of $50 to $100. But the pills are a prescription and that co-pay can soar.

?They can run $300 to $2,000 per month for each prescription,? Cindy Carter of the Cancer Support Foundation said.

To equalize those costs, a bill is being pushed in the Maryland legislature, named for Senator Jim Mathias? wife who died from breast cancer.

?And for the Stage Four community: We all do have terminal cancer. We realize that,? said CJ Corneliussen-James, president of METAvivor Support, a non-profit organization that promotes breast cancer research and awareness. ?But some of us can do for a long period of time with different drugs. What we need is the flexibility to take whatever drug our doctor believes is the absolute best drug for us, and will sustain our lives the longest.?

A life and death decision may sound cliched, but it?s exactly what people supporting this legislation are facing.

?I have a gentleman now that says I can only do two months, and after that I can?t do it. I have no more money. I?m just going to have to die,? Carter said.

Twelve states already have laws placing pills at the same co-pay rate as IVs. Sixteen, including Maryland, have bills pending.

Supporters of the bill say in the 15 states that have parity between chemotherapy treatments, there is no evidence of increased health insurance premiums.

Sony's Hirai to extend PlayStation strategy (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Incoming CEO Kazuo Hirai aims to re-shape Sony Corp by linking hardware and software through online networks -- a model he used at its PlayStation unit -- dismissing any suggestion the battered brand would revert to a gadget-centered strategy under his management.

In the meantime, he said, he would focus on paring costs at its TV unit and look to squeeze expenses elsewhere to return Sony to profit.

The Sony Computer Entertainment model "is a bigger concept we can grow into a bigger space," Hirai, 51, said in a group interview at the company's Tokyo headquarters. "Hardware drives software and software drives hardware," he added, referring to online sales of games and other content PlayStation owners.

Hirai oversaw the phenomenal rise of the PlayStation gaming system in the United States and since last March headed Sony's consumer products and services business.

He didn't say what changes the wider application of that strategy would have on Sony, which unlike its consumer electronics rivals such as Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc, owns significant content in movies, music and games software.

A more immediate task for Hirai, however, is to stem losses with cost savings that will add to cuts made by outgoing boss, Howard Stringer.

Hirai formally succeeds Stringer as CEO on April 1, with the once-stellar consumer electronics brand heading for what it warned last week would be a much bigger-than-expected $2.9 billion annual loss, its fourth in a row.

The surge of red ink has put Hirai under intense pressure from investors and ratings agencies to quickly staunch losses at the sprawling electronics group. Hirai pledged not to flinch from tough decisions to trim costs and renewed a promise to return the TV business to profit in two years.

"We have to make some hard decisions on where there are some redundancies and reduce the fixed costs in a variety of different areas," he said, pointing to sales units in Japan, Europe and the United States, supply chains and Tokyo headquarters functions as areas where cuts could be made.

Credit rating agency Standard and Poor's on Wednesday cut its long-term debt rating on Sony and warned it may drop it another notch within a year if Hirai fails to stem TV losses and deliver a significant boost to profitability. [ID:nL4E8D861P] Sony was also downgraded by Moody's last month.

BIG BLEED

The TV division has lost more than $11 billion over eight fiscal years. Together, Sony, Panasonic and Sharp expect to lose $17 billion this year alone, highlighting the savaging of Japan's electronics industry by foreign rivals led by Samsung, weak demand and a strong yen.

A goal for Sony to end that bleeding in two years was "tracking where we said it would be at the end of the year, or a little ahead of that," Hirai said.

Better products would, he said, add as much as 40 billion yen ($520 million) in profit, with cost improvements adding another 50 billion yen, as part of a strategy he described as "defense and offense."

As well as weak global TV demand, Sony has been hammered by last year's flooding in Thailand that ruptured supply chains, a big one-off charge for exiting a flat-panel joint venture with Samsung, and smart competition from Apple and Samsung that has squeezed market share in TVs, smartphones and other gadgets.

Hirai predicted that LCD technology would remain the main battlefield in TVs for at least three years, before next generation technology takes hold.

STRATEGY ROLE

Hirai has yet to reveal his management line-up, naming only Tadashi Saito, a former Sony chief financial officer at Sony Electronics in the United States, as the company's first chief strategy officer since 2005.

Saito will work with senior managers "to formulate strategies for group companies overall, as well as giving us a lot of input and advice on M&A activity," Hirai said.

Hiroshi Yoshioka, previously identified by Stringer as one of "Four Musketeers" who could succeed him, along with Hirai, will take Sony into the medical imaging business and head up the group's innovation center, "seeking out new business opportunities," Hirai said.

As of Thursday's close, Sony shares had gained 13 percent to a 14-week high of 1,544 yen since Hirai was named as the next CEO, outperforming a 2.1 percent gain on the benchmark Nikkei average.

The stock, which slumped more than 60 percent during Stringer's seven-year reign, was down 0.4 percent in early trading Friday.

A Sony veteran of 28 years, Hirai was credited with reviving the PlayStation gaming operations through aggressive cost-cutting, in competition with Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox.

A year ago, Hirai, a fluent English speaker, was promoted to head the consumer products and services business, overseeing Sony's network operations. He was also at the forefront of efforts to counter hackers who accessed Sony customers' personal details.

He takes over after a period of cost-cutting by Stringer, a rare foreign CEO in Japan who sold off TV factories in Spain, Slovakia and Mexico and outsourced more than half of the group's production to outside companies, including Hon Hai Precision Industry, a Taiwanese contract electronics maker whose key customer is Apple.

($1 = 76.8950 Japanese yen)

RPAC to launch ?Stop ID Theft NOW!? Campaign

At some point in the next 24 hours, a new ?Stop ID Theft NOW!? Campaign will be launched by RPAC, the Records Preservation & Access Committee (a joint committee of the Federation of Genealogical Societies, the National Genealogical Society, and the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies).

This initiative is important. It?s not enough for us as genealogists to say what we?re against ? and there?s no doubt about that: we?re against willy-nilly closing off access to records. We also have to say what we?re for ? and there?s no doubt about that either: we?re for using the records we have to combat the problem of identity theft.

The point that RPAC will ask us all to help it make ? with the Administration, including the Commissioner of Social Security, with our Senators and with our members of the House of Representatives ? is that the answer to identity theft is not to hide information but to use it. That there are steps that can be taken, right now, this minute, to affirmatively use the Social Security death master file to stop identity thieves dead in their tracks, and prevent them from committing fraud by using the Social Security numbers of deceased children and adults. Today?s blog post Why You Care About MGC, SSDI, the DMF and RPAC by the President of the Massachusetts Genealogical Council Polly Kimmit is a great overview of this whole issue.

One key element of the RPAC initiative will be a petition drive, which will ?urge the Administration to take steps that should curtail the filing of fraudulent tax refund claims based upon identity theft from deceased infants and adults almost immediately.? As soon as the initiative is formally launched, links to the petition site will be posted here and throughout the blogs and other news outlets of the genealogical community. Every single one of us should sign that petition and follow it up with letters, emails and faxes to our own Senators and Representatives supporting this initiative.

But make no mistake about this, folks: signing an online petition is not going to be enough. We?re still going to have to contact our legislators ? individually and as genealogy groups ? and let them know where we stand and NOT just where we stand with everyone else in opposition to identity theft. Saying publicly that we don?t like identity theft any more than anyone else is something we all need to do ? because it?s the right thing to do and because it will help keep our overall position from being misinterpreted as not understanding or not caring about the impact identity theft has on people.

But taking that public stance ? by itself ? isn?t going to keep access to records open.

Yes, it?s important that we join the fight against identity theft? but let?s all keep one thing firmly in mind: access to public information cannot be allowed to become a casualty in that fight. Only when we help our elected representatives understand that using public records is the way to stop fraud, not closing those records, can we protect all of the interests we all have here. That means educating ourselves, understanding the issues and speaking up on behalf of freedom of information. As many times, and by as many means, as we need to.
