Tigers: The Perfect Pet | Bedtime Math

Tigers are one of the world?s most beautiful animals, and also one of the most terrifying.? But the fact that they can take down large animals hasn?t hurt their popularity.? Thanks to their stripey fur and slinky way of walking, they beat out the dog as the world?s most popular animal in Animal Planet?s poll.? Far more people have dogs as pets, though, since dogs are much easier to take care of?or are they?

Wee ones: If you get both a pet tiger and a pet dog to compare them as pets, how many legs do they have altogether?

Little kids: Dogs need to be walked, but cats don?t.? If the dog needs to walk 3 times a day for 10 minutes each time, but the tiger just needs 2 minutes to sprint up the street and back, how many more minutes of exercise does the dog need each day?? Bonus: How many times do you have to take the dog out in a week, vs. the tiger?

Big kids: To make mealtime easy, you train both your pet tiger and your pet dog to eat hamburger meat.? If the dog eats 3 times a day, but the tiger just eats one giant meal once every 5 days, how many more times does the dog eat in a month? (Use June ? 30 days).? Bonus: If your dog eats 1 pound of meat each meal but the tiger eats 70 pounds, how many pounds of meat does each one chow down that month?

Answers:
Wee ones: 8 legs.

Little kids: 28 more minutes per day (30 vs. 2).? Bonus: 21 times for the dog, vs. 7 times for the tiger.

Big kids: The dog needs 90 meals, whereas the tiger needs only 6, so the dog eats 84 more meals.? Bonus: The dog eats 90 pounds, while the tiger eats 420 pounds ? oof.

The verdict: Tigers seem easier to take care of, but they eat a LOT more.
